“Work less, make more” sounds like hype — until you see the data. I have POTS, work under 20 hrs/week, and made $70K in December from my couch. Here’s how.

In December 2025, I had a POTS flare-up so severe I could barely stand without feeling like I was going to pass out.
I worked almost exclusively from my couch. I didn’t launch anything. I didn’t email my list for over two weeks. I took nearly three weeks off for the holidays.
And I made over $85,000 that month… with an hourly rate of $820.
I’m not telling you this to brag. I’m telling you this because if you’ve been grinding yourself into the ground trying to hit your revenue goals, I need you to hear this: the productivity model you’ve been sold is not the only one. It might not even be the right one for you.
This is what I call Horizontal Ambition. And it might be the most counterintuitive business strategy I’ve ever practiced.
Table of Contents
One of my most memorable “productive” mornings involved ordering a half dozen donuts via Uber Eats and lying in bed until 10:40 AM. I journaled. I held my own hand, metaphorically. I repeated to myself what Tara Brach teaches: this belongs. I did not open my laptop until nearly noon.
That morning was in April 2025. I was in my luteal phase… the week before my period, when estrogen and progesterone drop and my body essentially demands rest. I’ve had chronic illness my whole life (OCD, POTS, hypermobile connective tissue disorder, small fiber neuropathy, hypothyroidism, PCOS), and I’ve spent years learning to stop fighting what my nervous system is telling me.
So I didn’t fight it. I lay there, I ordered the donuts, I journaled.
And here’s what happened: I checked my sales at noon and we were already at $120 for the day. My business made money while I ate pastries in bed.
Horizontal Ambition is the practice of building a high-profit business by treating rest as a revenue strategy, not a reward for productivity. It’s the direct opposite of what the online business industry preaches — which is some variation of “outwork everyone,” “5 AM club,” or “high performance = high output.”
The conventional wisdom is vertical: climb harder, move faster, produce more.
Horizontal Ambition is the zag. It says: your nervous system regulation is your primary business metric. Not your email open rates. Not your Instagram reach. Your ability to work sustainably, from a regulated state, for years — that’s the actual engine.
This isn’t laziness dressed up in spiritual language. It’s a structural approach to building a business that doesn’t require you to destroy yourself to operate it.
The key distinction: I’m not resting instead of working. I’m building systems that work while I rest, and protecting the energy I have for the work only I can do.

Working less can make you more money when your business runs on evergreen systems — automated sales funnels, SEO-driven traffic, and email sequences that convert without your daily involvement. This is the fundamental architecture shift that makes Horizontal Ambition possible.
Most entrepreneurs make money in direct proportion to how many hours they show up. They trade time for dollars… whether they’re freelancing, coaching, or launching constantly. When they stop working, revenue stops. The business is them.
My business is different. I’ve spent years building:
When I’m on the couch with POTS and electrolytes, those systems are still running. Sales come in. That’s not magic. That’s infrastructure.
For entrepreneurs with chronic illness, neurodivergence, or high-stress lives, nervous system regulation is the variable that determines the quality and sustainability of all output. This isn’t soft wellness talk — it’s operational strategy.
I’ve had panic disorder and OCD my entire life. I was diagnosed with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome — a condition where blood pools in the lower body when upright, causing dizziness, fatigue, and near-fainting) in late 2025, along with hypermobile CTD and small fiber neuropathy. All of which cause significant fatigue and make traditional “push through it” productivity advice not just ineffective but genuinely harmful.
What I’ve learned — through years of trial, chronic illness, and one very productive couch — is that output quality drops sharply when I’m operating from a dysregulated nervous system. The emails I write when exhausted need rewrites. The decisions I make from scarcity thinking usually cost me more to undo. The work I force through resistance takes three times as long.
So I stopped measuring my productivity by hours logged and started measuring by something harder to fake: How do I feel at the end of the week? Am I still here? Can I do this again next Monday?
That’s the metric that’s kept me in business, sustainably, through years of health challenges.

Cyclical productivity — scheduling creative and strategic work in alignment with your hormonal or energy cycle, and protecting rest periods as non-negotiable — is how I sustain high output with low hours. This is sometimes called cycle syncing, and it works with or without a uterus; energy naturally ebbs and flows for everyone.
Here’s how it roughly maps to a menstrual cycle, which I track and use to plan my weeks:
| Cycle Phase | Energy Level | Best Work Types |
|---|---|---|
| Menstrual (Days 1–5) | Very low | Rest, light admin, reflection |
| Follicular (Days 6–13) | Rising | Brainstorming, planning, new projects |
| Ovulation (Days 14–17) | Peak | Calls, launches, sales, big creative |
| Luteal (Days 18–28) | Declining | Editing, systems work, finishing tasks |
In March 2025, I wrote in my diary: “I’m on Day 9 of my cycle, in my follicular/Spring phase, and I always feel a burst of creativity and energy during this time. I know the scales will balance back out when I’m luteal and hate everyone and everything and don’t want to do anything.”
That self-awareness (and the willingness to actually structure my work around it) is what lets me sprint when I have energy and stop when I don’t, without either phase tanking my revenue.
The sprints are possible because the rest is protected. One doesn’t work without the other.
Evergreen systems — the automated, always-running infrastructure of a digital business — are what separate entrepreneurs who must work to earn from those who earn whether or not they work. For me, those systems live in a small stack of tools that handle everything from traffic to conversion to delivery without my daily involvement.
Here’s what’s running in the background while I’m horizontal:
Traffic: My blog at successwithsoul.co ranks organically in Google for keywords my ideal clients are actually searching. I haven’t posted on social media since 2021. I don’t run my traffic from Instagram Reels or TikTok. SEO is slow — but it compounds. I wrote a post in 2022 that still brings in leads every week.
Email nurture: New subscribers enter an automated email sequence in Kartra — my all-in-one platform for email marketing, funnels, and membership delivery. That sequence warms them up over weeks, introduces my philosophy, and makes offers at the right moment. I don’t manually email every new subscriber. The system does.
Offers: My programs — the Mindful Business Academy (MBA), The Room, and the $1K/Day Experiment — are available 24/7. There’s no open/close cart. No waitlist. Someone can find my blog post at 2am on a Tuesday, read for an hour, and buy a program before I’ve had my morning coffee.
Delivery: Everything digital is automatically delivered through Kartra and Skool. My clients don’t wait for me to send them a link. The system handles it.
This infrastructure took time to build. But it’s why December 2025 — when I was sick, barely standing, working couch-only hours — still produced $70K in revenue.
A typical week in my business runs under 20 hours, sometimes significantly less, while generating consistent daily revenue. Here’s what that actually looks like from the inside:
In the week of May 19, 2025, I worked a total of hours that resulted in an average daily revenue of $815 — with no launching, no social media, and no 40-hour week. My diary from that week ended with: “I didn’t launch. I didn’t post on social. I didn’t pull a 40-hour week. What I did do: delivered value to clients, refined backend systems, prioritized rest and recovery, and made intentional aligned sales every single day.”
In the week of August 18, 2025, I worked approximately 14 hours — most of it client care, evergreen systems work, or asset creation. My AI business analyst (I use a custom ChatGPT I call Mildred to analyze my weekly diaries) noted: “You’ve built a low-input, high-margin business that’s profitable and flexible.”
And then there’s December 2025. POTS flare-up, working from the couch, nearly three weeks off for the holidays. $70K+ in the month. $820/hour for the week I did work.
The pattern is consistent: Lower hours do not mean lower revenue, because the revenue is not generated by my hours. It’s generated by the systems.
Yes — but it requires a specific type of business model. It works when your revenue is generated by automated systems (evergreen funnels, SEO, email sequences) rather than your active time. Coaches who trade hours for dollars, or businesses that depend on constant live launching, cannot use this model without first building the infrastructure that makes passive or recurring revenue possible.
Horizontal Ambition is the practice of treating rest as a business strategy rather than a recovery tool. Instead of pushing through resistance, you stop. Instead of measuring productivity by hours worked, you measure by sustainable output over time. The term comes from the idea that ambition doesn’t have to be vertical — relentless upward climbing — it can be horizontal: wide, steady, and grounded.
By building a business that doesn’t require your physical presence to function. For me, that means evergreen digital products, automated email marketing via Kartra, SEO-driven content, and recurring memberships (The Room, the $1K/Day Experiment) that generate predictable monthly revenue regardless of my health on any given day. Rest becomes viable when the business doesn’t stop the moment you do.
Cycle syncing — also called cyclical productivity — is the practice of scheduling different types of work to match your energy cycle, whether that’s a menstrual cycle, seasonal rhythm, or personal energy pattern. High-focus creative work is scheduled during peak energy phases (follicular, ovulation). Lower-demand tasks — editing, admin, systems review — are saved for lower-energy phases (luteal, menstrual). Full rest is protected as a non-negotiable during depletion phases.
No. I haven’t been on social media since 2021. My traffic comes from SEO and Google search, my visibility comes from podcast guesting, summits, and affiliate partnerships, and my sales come from email marketing. Social media is one traffic strategy among many — it’s not required, and for many entrepreneurs, it’s actually counterproductive to the kind of sustainable, low-input business this model requires.

If you’re skeptical — good. You should be. “Work less and make more” is one of the most overused promises in the online business space, and most of the people saying it are selling you a course about selling courses.
So here’s what I’m actually offering: transparency.
The $1K/Day Experiment is my behind-the-scenes membership where I share my real weekly diaries — the ones with the POTS flare-ups and the donuts and the couch mornings and the $820/hour weeks.
You get the actual data: daily revenue, hours worked, what I did and didn’t do, what worked and what flopped, and an honest look at what running this kind of business actually requires.
No manufactured highlight reel. No polished launch debrief with everything edited out. Just the real thing, every week, so you can see what this model looks like from the inside and decide if it’s something you want to build for yourself.
