Claude Skills are reusable AI instructions that save 10+ hours/week. Here’s how our mastermind built theirs in seven days — without writing code.
I have a Claude Skill that, every Sunday night, asks me what I want to eat that week. I tell it what I want to eat. It gives me recipes, builds a ClickUp task for my housekeeper with the prep list, opens Instacart, adds every ingredient, and waits for me to click ‘place order.’ That is the entire amount of work I do to feed my family of four.
This is what Claude Skills actually unlock — not “AI productivity” in the abstract, but specific, weird, embarrassingly personal little workflows that quietly delete hours from your week. And the best part: you don’t have to know how to code. You don’t have to write a single instruction yourself. You just have a conversation with Claude, and it builds the skill for you.
Claude Skills are reusable instruction files — saved permanently to your Claude account — that teach Claude how to do specific tasks in your voice, your brand, your way, every single time. According to Anthropic’s own documentation, Skills trigger automatically when relevant, persist across every conversation, and stack on top of each other to compound your time savings.
This month inside The Room, our group mastermind, the Roomies spent a focused week building theirs. In just one week, dozens of business owners had a working AI team — branded, voiced, and trained on their own intellectual property.

Table of Contents
A Claude Skill is a plain text file that lives in your Claude account and tells Claude how to handle a specific kind of task — writing emails in your voice, building branded HTML pages, formatting your newsletter, planning meals, debriefing your week. It activates automatically when the task comes up. You don’t have to remember to call it.
Every Skill has two parts: a description (which tells Claude when to use it) and a body (which tells Claude how to do the work). You can also upload reference files: your brand guidelines, your past emails, your client transcripts, whatever, and Claude uses them as context.
The thing I love most: Claude builds the Skill for you. You don’t write the instructions yourself. You just say “I want a Skill that writes my Sunday newsletter” and Claude interviews you, drafts the file, lets you test it, and saves it. No coding, no syntax, no prompt engineering degree required.
OpenAI announced that custom GPTs — those bespoke ChatGPT assistants we all spent 2024 building, will be deprecated by August 2026. With this news and the unknown about what will come after August, I stopped building custom GPTs. I’ve been migrating everything to Claude Skills instead, and honestly, they’re better.
Custom GPTs required you to navigate to them, and couldn’t talk to each other. Claude Skills trigger automatically in any conversation, stack on top of one another, and work across the entire Claude ecosystem — Claude.ai, Claude Co-Work, Claude Code, Projects.
Here’s the comparison that finally sold me:
| Feature | Custom GPTs | Claude Skills |
|---|---|---|
| Triggers automatically | ❌ — must select the GPT | ✅ — Claude knows when to use it |
| Stacks with other skills | ❌ — one at a time | ✅ — layer multiple in one chat |
| Works across projects/incognito | ❌ — siloed | ✅ — available everywhere |
| Future of platform | Sunsetting Aug 2026 | Active product roadmap |
| You need to write the prompt | ✅ — yes | ❌ — Claude writes it for you |
| Knowledge file support | ✅ | ✅ — called “reference files” |
If you already have custom GPTs you love, you don’t have to start from scratch. Open a Claude chat, paste your custom GPT instructions, and say “turn this into a Claude Skill.” Claude will rebuild it — usually better.
Before you build a single thing yourself, install these two pre-built Skills from Anthropic. They live inside Claude already. You don’t pay extra. You just turn them on:
1. Skill Creator — the meta-Skill that builds new Skills for you. When you tell Claude “I want a Skill that writes my podcast pitch emails,” Skill Creator is what handles the interview, drafts the file, and gives you a “Save Skill” button.
2. Theme Factory — pre-built design themes that Claude can use as a starting point when you’re creating brand-styled HTML. You’ll customize this with your own colors and fonts later, but having the foundation already installed saves you about an hour of setup.
You can do all of this on the free Claude plan, but the $20/month Pro plan is the most no-brainer money you’ll spend this year. I’m on the $100/month Max plan and only because I want Claude doing work for me literally all day long.
The week’s mission was simple: install three Skills by Friday. One had to be an HTML/design skill. The other two were Roomie’s choice. Here’s the build path we used.
This is the most important Skill you’ll ever build. It teaches Claude how you actually sound — your signature phrases, your cringe phrases, your weird obsessions, your audience. Every other copywriting Skill you build later will read this one first, so it never has to be re-explained.
You build it by opening a chat and saying: “I want to create a brand voice Skill. Interview me.” Claude asks you about your voice, your audience, your signature language. You answer honestly. Claude drafts the file. You review, edit, and save it.
If you’ve already done our Brand iOS (it’s included in Scale with AI and the Mindful Business Academy), you can shortcut this entirely. Upload the document Brand iOS produced and tell Claude “use this as the reference file for my brand voice Skill.” It will pull every detail straight from the doc.
This is the visual side of your brand — colors, fonts, design vibe. It’s what Claude uses every time it builds you HTML, whether that’s an email, a sales page, a blog post, or a portal lesson.
The build process: open a chat (Theme Factory is already installed, so Claude knows what to do), and say “I want to create a custom brand theme Skill. Here’s my brand information.” Then attach your brand colors, fonts, logo, and a screenshot of your homepage.
For the homepage screenshot, install the Go Full Page Chrome extension — it captures a single image of your entire homepage, scroll and all. Download it as a PNG and upload to Claude. The output is a complete design Skill that includes your color palette, font stack, button styles, spacing rules, everything Claude needs to make on-brand HTML on demand.
This is where Claude Skills go from “nice productivity tool” to “stop paying a web designer.” Once you have a brand voice Skill and a brand theme Skill, you can have Claude generate HTML for emails, portal lessons, blog posts, sales pages, opt-in pages — and the output will look like your brand without any extra prompting.
The HTML Skill you build depends on where you’re publishing. The most common builds our Roomies completed this week:
The Skill builds the same way as the others: open a chat, say “I want to build a Skill that creates HTML emails for Kartra in my brand,” and Claude interviews you on the specifics. The first time you publish the HTML, it might look slightly off — your platform does something to the code on publish. You go view the published page’s source code, paste it back into Claude with “fix what my platform broke,” and Claude debugs it. Then you tell Claude “update the Skill so this doesn’t happen again.” From that point forward, the HTML publishes correctly the first time.
This is the part nobody talks about, and it’s where most people get stuck. Claude can write beautiful HTML for you. Then you copy it, paste it into your platform, and it looks like a ransom note.
The fix I keep coming back to: a dedicated publishing tool that speaks Claude’s language natively. For me, that’s HTML Pub.
For sales pages, opt-in pages, and full custom landing pages, I use HTML Pub — $10/month, owned by Leadpages, and the only tool I’ve found that has a native Claude MCP connector. What that means: Claude can publish pages directly to your custom domain without you copying and pasting anything.
I built the entire Coffee with Claude sales page inside a Claude chat. It’s hosted on HTML Pub, served from pages.successwithsoul.co, and linked directly into my Kartra checkout. The first version took 30 minutes from idea to live page. Worth every dollar of the $10/month.
Here’s where Skills go from “I have to remember to use them” to “they run themselves.” Claude Co-Work is Claude’s desktop and Chrome app — and inside it, you can schedule tasks that run automatically.
You build a Skill. Then you schedule it to run on a recurring basis. The Skill executes itself, does the work, and delivers the output — without you opening Claude at all.
A few examples of what you can do with Co-Work:
You build the Skill once. You schedule it once. It runs forever. This is what 10+ hours per week of saved time actually looks like in practice.
One of the best parts of Get It Done Week is seeing the range of businesses that show up and do the work. Our Roomies come from completely different niches, audiences, and stages of business — but they all walked away this month with the same thing: custom Claude skills trained on their businesses.

No. Claude builds the Skills for you. You have a conversation, Claude interviews you, drafts the file, and saves it. The only thing you do is answer questions and click “Save Skill” at the end. You never write a line of code or even a system prompt.
Some natively, some via the HTML workflow I described above. Claude has direct connectors (MCPs) with ClickUp, Airtable, HTML Pub, and Canva — meaning Claude can take actions inside those tools without copy/paste. Kartra doesn’t have an MCP yet, so we work around it by having Claude generate HTML that we paste into Kartra’s editors.
A Project is a single workspace with its own chat history and reference files — useful for ongoing work on one specific thing (like “client X website”). A Skill is a reusable instruction that triggers automatically across all your chats and Projects. Skills are the system. Projects are the workspace.
Your brand voice Skill takes about 20 minutes to build, mostly because Claude is interviewing you and you’re answering. Your brand theme Skill takes about 15 minutes. Once those two are built, every additional Skill takes 5-10 minutes because Claude already knows your voice and your brand.
