Welcome to our new Soulpreneur 411 series — where I answer your questions about building a business that serves your whole life. Today I’m offering tips on email marketing to your list after you’ve been radio silent for a while.

This week’s question comes from Stacy Karen at NoFussNatural.com.
She wants to know: Do you have any tips on emailing my list after I’ve been MIA for a really long time? Do you think it’s better to just jump straight back into it, or build back up slowly?
Whether this question reflects your exact situation or not, I think the reason for this question is super common.
What I mean by this is that I think sometimes we all (me as much as anybody else) have a tendency to overthink things in our business. We can overthink, overanalyze, or put too much importance on something that at the end of the day probably isn’t going to make a big difference.
The good news is that there really is no right or wrong answer to this question. Because ultimately, I think you should just do what feels right to you to do.
Here are some questions you can ask to help you come up with an answer:
When it comes to being consistent, it’s not so much the frequency that matters, but rather that you pick something that you can keep up with. If you can keep up with two emails a week, do two emails a week. If you can only do one email a week or one email a month, do that.
Another important consideration is just thinking about also what your goals are.
What are these emails accomplishing? Why are you sending out these emails? Is there something in particular you’re launching? Or that you’re trying to get people to do? What’s the call to action? What’s the desired outcome here? What is the result that you want these emails to lead to?
I think that also might help in terms of figuring out what frequency would be best.
If you’ve ever had a lot of time lapse (for whatever reason) in your email marketing, you probably discovered during this time away from your business that it would have been great if you had some automated systems in place so that your list could have been getting emails even if you were not working.
This leads to one of my biggest tips on email marketing: it’s a great idea to set up some type of automated email sequence or auto responder series or evergreen funnel-type email sequence, so that your list can be frequently hearing from you.
You don’t have to be showing up every single day to do it.

There’s a second part to this question that I think is important to address, as well. And that’s: Do we directly mention the absence?
What I find is that transparency is the best thing here, saying up front, Hey, you haven’t heard from me for a while.
If you feel comfortable, sharing why you’ve been gone can be really important for connection and respect and community. So maybe you want to transparently and vulnerably share why you’ve been away, and then share that you are back, and this is what they can expect moving forward.
You might want to set your expectations that some people are going to unsubscribe because they forgot why they came. And they don’t really remember who you even are. And so they’re just trying to clean out their Inbox. It’s not personal. But it might be something that happens. So just set your expectations for that.
Aside from that, people are going to respond however they’re going to respond. We can’t predict or control their response, we can only control what we do.
So again, that comes back to: what is the result you’re trying to accomplish? After you send an email or two, you can say, Hey, I’ve been out of the game, here’s why. Here’s what’s going to come next.
And then? Just get back into whatever schedule works for you.

I wanted to get your opinion on emailing my list after I've been MIA for a really long time. I've been out of my business for quite a few months due to some very personal circumstances. And I'd love to get back into it. But I feel really uncertain about how to approach emailing my list again after they haven't heard from me for so long. So what are your thoughts on that? I really love to email them twice a week. But I feel like that's kind of overkill after they haven't heard from me in such a long time. So do you think it's better to just jump straight back into it or build back up slowly? So email them with less frequency, maybe like once a week or something like that, and gradually build up? Hey, Stacy, thanks so much for a great question. I am loving this 411 series. And I think your question is one that maybe isn't necessarily a super common question in itself. But I think the reason you're asking the question in the first place is super common. And what I mean by that is that I think sometimes we all me as much as anybody else, have a tendency to overthink things in our business. And so I think there's a little bit of overthinking over analyzing or putting too much importance on something that at the end of the day probably isn't going to make a big difference. So I hope that helps a little bit just in framing, like what you should do, because ultimately, I think you should just do what feels right to you to do. What is the frequency of emailing that you can now keep up with with this new schedule? Are you back in action and full time at it again? Or are you still you know, dealing with some things in your personal life? Or have another job? What's the consistency that you can keep up with?
