Welcome to our new Soulpreneur 411 series — where I answer your questions about building a business that serves your whole life. Today we’ve got a recording of a live coaching call! We’re talking about how to know when you have enough content to “go live” with your blog and all the pressure we put on ourselves before we launch the website.
This week’s question comes from Amy in Chicago.
She wants to know: If you’re starting a blog, and have the idea for it, how much content should you put up front before you launch the website?
I get this question a LOT, so I’m glad somebody asked this so that I can answer it here.
I feel like this is one of those things that we build up in our heads, that when we launch, it’s going to mean something. We tell ourselves we have to have all of our ducks in a row. We have to have this big library of content, everything has to look perfect. This is huge, it’s time to launch the website, and we’re making it this defining moment in our business.
And the secret is, it’s not. It’s actually one of the most anti-climatic moments in your business ever.
I think that this belief that it is this meaningful, defining event keeps us all from making progress from moving forward. It keeps from getting started from doing the thing that we set out to do. A lot of it comes from perfectionism, of course. But in addition, I think a lot of it comes just from this belief that this is going to be a big deal in our business.
Whether it’s fortunate or unfortunate, the truth is, it’s really not. When you launch the website, it really means nothing, because nobody’s really going to see it when you first launch.
You don’t have an audience yet. It’s not like you’re sending an email out to a list of 100,000 people saying We’re launched, go check it out.
In reality, you’re probably sending an email out to a handful of friends and family. And these are people who would support you whether or not it’s perfect or horrible — or somewhere in between, which is likely where it is.
The thing you really want to do is signal to Google: Hey, this site is ready to be crawled. I’m ready for traffic, so start sending people my way.
There are a couple of things you have to make sure you do in order to get that traffic:
You could technically launch the website with zero.
But if I had to say do it this way, I would say launch with one, and have the first blog post be your story. It’s why you’ve started this blog, why you started this business. It’s what you’re trying to help people do, what problem are you trying to help people solve. That’s a great first blog post.
Then start with your whatever consistent schedule you have chosen. Whether that’s once a week, or once a month, or anywhere in between, then you just start doing that.
Again, I want to reiterate: you do not need much!
My encouragement to you is to take the leap and just do it. Yes, it’s vulnerable. Yes, it’s scary. You want people to see you and respect what you’re doing.
But you have to realize it’s all a work in progress. It’s never going to be perfect on the first go, anyway, so there’s no point in waiting. You can go live, play with it for a week or a month or two (I actually waiting two months before I announced my launch). Add some posts if you like. Then make your official announcement to your support circle and social media followers — and just dive in and do the work. Test and tweak as you go. It’ll all work out.

Welcome, welcome, welcome. We are back with the Success with Soul podcast. I'm your host, Kate Kordsmeier. And we are officially in season two of the show now. And I'm excited because we're doing something a little different. We've just released a brand new series called solopreneur 411, where entrepreneurs just like you can send in questions if you want some personalized laser coaching. And I will answer each week. So if you want to leave me a message and be featured on the show and get some free coaching for yourself, which is usually only available inside the incubator, head on over to successwithsoul.co/Ask, and you can be featured and get coached as well. So with that, let's dive into today's question.
Amy 0:52
Hi, Kate, this is Amy from Chicago. And I wanted to know, if you're starting a blog, and have the idea for it, how much content should you put up front? Before you launch it? Thank you so much. I really enjoy your podcast.
Kate Kordsmeier 1:07
Hello, Amy from Chicago. Thanks for a very commonly asked question. I'm so glad somebody asked this so that I can answer it here. So I feel like this is one of those things that we build up in our heads, that when we launch, it's going to mean something. And so we have to have all of our ducks in a row, we have to have this big library of content, everything has to look perfect. We're launching this is huge. And we're making it this defining moment in our business. And the secret is, it's not, it's actually one of the most anti climatic moments in your business ever. And I think that this belief that it is this really meaningful defining event is what keeps us all from making progress from moving forward from getting started from doing the thing that we set out to do. And a lot of it comes from perfectionism, of course, but I think a lot of it comes just from this belief that this is going to be a big deal in our business. And whether it's fortunate or unfortunate The truth is, it's really not because when you launch, it really means nothing, because nobody's really going to see it when you first launch. You don't have an audience yet. It's not like you're sending an email out to a list of 100,000 people saying we're launched, go check it out. In reality, you're actually probably sending an email out to a handful of friends and family who would support you whether or not it's perfect or horrible, or somewhere in between, which is likely where it is. And really what you're doing is you're signaling to Google, hey, this site is ready to be crawled, I'm ready for traffic, start sending people my way. So there's a couple things you have to make sure you do in order to get that traffic, for example, submitting your sitemap to Google Search Console. A lot of these technical pieces are the things we teach inside of the incubator. However, aside from those technical pieces, what you're doing is just signaling, this website is live and I'm ready for traffic. So what I actually recommend people do for quote unquote, launching their website or their blog, is just do it with an about page and a homepage. And you are good to go. Maybe a privacy policy thrown in there. There's a couple legal things also that we cover inside the incubator. So there's some pieces like that, in terms of how many blog posts you should have, you can launch with zero, you could launch with one that might be if I had to say do it this way, I might say launch with one and the first blog post is your story. It's why you've started this blog, why you started this business, what you're trying to help people do, what problem are you trying to help people solve, and kind of your why for the business. That's a great first blog post. And then you can just start with your whatever consistent schedule you have chosen. So whether that's once a week, you're going to be dropping a blog post or once a month or anywhere in between, then you just start doing that. So you don't need anything besides a homepage and about page and a privacy policy and maybe one blog post about your why to launch. Again, I want to reiterate, not only do you not need much, but you also if your website is already live, for example, if anybody could type in your URL and find your website you are launched like there is no launch, so to speak, if your website is live, if it's not launched yet or if it's not officially live it has like a coming soon page or something. And the day that you turn that off and it's officially live that's launched so like I said it's a little anti climatic and I think we build it up in our heads to be this big moment. And it's just not. So I mentioned that this is a really common question that I get asked and a lot of people ask more. So like, how many posts do I need to have before I can go live with my site? But this was actually a question that somebody else in the incubator asked more from a mindset perspective, and like, how did I tell people that I launched? And what was that process like for me? And so I want to play a clip of my answer from that, because I think it will also apply to your question here, some of it might be a little redundant to what I just shared. But I think there's some other nuggets in there, that would be helpful. So here we go. So I think I waited maybe a month or two, I think I launched rootin revenue at the end of October. And I think around the end of the year, I actually like told people I knew, Hey, I've launched this thing, what I realized is that it didn't matter. Because short from one day of having 50 people, Max go to the site and just see it, they weren't my people, they weren't my ideal readers, they didn't come back, you know, the it was great to get some friendly support from my community. But it did not affect anything about even the short term success of the blog. So I think the mindset reframe that I see meeting to happen here is that you think this is going to be a defining moment, and it's not, is not going to matter. It's not going to make a difference other than people going, Hey, congrats, that's awesome. And it is a nice, like pick me up and to have that support. So it's not to discount that. But it will not affect anything else. So I think just putting too much emphasis on like this being a thing. It's not a thing.
Amy 6:50
So I really appreciate you saying it just like that. Because honestly, in the back of my head, that's what I keep saying to myself, as I'm guessing this is not even really going to be a thing, and I have to stop making it one. So it's helpful to hear exactly that you have it. I had a feeling probably what it was, yeah,
Kate Kordsmeier 7:08
yeah, I get it. I mean, I think we all do it. And it's you know, we are putting ourselves out there, it's very vulnerable. And so it feels scary. And we want it to look great, and especially to people that know us, and we want them to, you know, respect what we're doing. So that's why I mean, wait a couple months, if you feel like you just want it to look nice that you can feel really proud to tell your friends and family about it. But don't wait because you think it's going to change the course of anything in your business. One question for you is how many of the people that follow you on social media? Are your ideal clients or aren't going to, like if they didn't know you that they would become followers? Because it's probably a small number. And even like when I first started really sorry, go ahead.
Amy 7:55
No. It's probably just a hand. There's probably some, but it's just a handful, I'm sure.
Kate Kordsmeier 8:02
Yeah. And it's not to say like, then those people could tell somebody that they know that, you know, Hey, my friend, Melissa, or my sister niece, or whoever, you know, like, started this thing, you should go check it out. I have people do that. And it was nice. But again, it was like a handful of people. So it wasn't anything that was going to really make a difference. Molly says you'll be shocked. Anything you do, they will think is amazing. Because it's so foreign to what they do. Yeah. So true.
Amy 8:31
Yeah, I had that hunch, too, is that there's no one that I that I know, in my immediate circles, that that is doing this. So I think that's also very true. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. Yeah, Sabrina,
Sabrina 8:45
I was just going to add, the only thing I would say to that just playing devil's advocate a little bit because I do think you should just get started and but is asking your support circle to share for you to like, Hey, I'm doing this thing. And it would mean a lot because you never know whose eyes they could get it on. Yeah. But I don't think you I don't think you should wait to do that. I think maybe just set a date in the future that like, I'm going to ask my people to share for me on January 1, or whatever.
Amy 9:16
I know. That's helpful. Thank you. Yeah, I do have sort of some things sort of written out of where I will ask them to, to share and that sort of thing. I mean, I have like, probably 20 posts. I mean, the site is it's not empty by any means. You know, obviously I have much bigger visions than where it is currently in many phases. But I think it's for me, I feel like it's something I just need to tick off my checklist and just like do it and then put it behind me knowing exactly what you all said, which is it's probably not going to be that significant of a thing in the long run. So yeah, yeah, it was helpful, very helpful. Everything that both of you said so thank you.
Kate Kordsmeier 9:54
So glad. All right. So there you have it first, little inside peek into what it's like like to be on these group coaching calls, you can see that it's conversational, that other members and other clients are jumping in and sharing their own experience and advice and tips.
