Welcome to our new Soulpreneur 411 series — where I answer your questions about building a business that serves your whole life. Today we’re taking an honest look at something that a lot of entrepreneurs naturally struggle with. We love novelty and new challenges. It’s normal to feel bored with work sometimes. How should we handle it?
Table of Contents
This week’s question comes from Jessica Cha of Basic Sunday.
She wants to know: Do you ever get tired or even bored from the projects that you work on? And if so, what do you do to get out of it and refresh yourself?
I love this question so much. As entrepreneurs, I think it’s almost part of our DNA. We choose this life in large part because of the variety and the creative control we have over our working hours.
Some topic grabs our attention, and we become obsessed. And if you’ve got your own biz, well, you have the option of incorporating that new interest into what you do (if it fits or makes sense to do that).
So the bright side of this tendency is that we’re insatiably curious. We love new ideas, challenges, and projects. There’s this capacity to pour our whole selves into a project or a task that energizes us. We can be really nimble and can learn so fast.
The downside is that we can get hungry for novelty. If the infatuation with a subject dims a little, we can get bored with work. We can find it hard to keep up the energy to see things through. Or we finish something and then don’t quite know what to do next.
In my own experience, often I’ll set a goal, and I’ll be all in on it. I’m so passionate about it. And then once I’ve reached the goal, I’m kind of like, Okay, now what?
For example, y’all probably know by now that in 2021, I sold my blog Root + Revel. There were a lot of reasons behind this. But one of the reasons was boredom. I felt like I had said what I wanted to say on the subject. I had done it for six years. And I was like, I’m ready for the next adventure.
I really love going down rabbit holes of different topics. As you know, I was a journalist for eight years before I started Root + Revel. I got paid to explore things I was interested in.
I poured that kind of energy into the blog because I loved holistic wellness. That rabbit hole for ended up being six years. I got so into it and produced tons of content to try and help others on the same journey.
And I loved it until I didn’t anymore. I say that because when I first started Root + Revel, never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would sell it. At the time, I thought, This is my dream job, I will do this forever.
That experience really shifted my perspective on how I go about building a business.
It made me really think about how all future things that I create. Like, how do I do this in a way that I am building a sellable asset in the future, whether or not I ever decide to do that?
Now I take that into account. I might want something different, and I know this about myself.
So how do we create a business that holds without us, so that we can step away if/when the time is right to do that? That might look like:
I want to highlight something important. I’m not saying sell your business every time you feel bored. But I’m saying to listen deeply. Sometimes boredom or waning interest are a signal that a chapter is closing. That’s a soul-level knowing that it’s time to let go and start something fresh.
That kind of knowing feels different from the everyday experience of just being bored with work or with a certain task.
Here’s what I do for that more quotidian kind of fatigue:
I always think of a line from Sex in the City. Carrie said, “That’s the thing about needs: once they’re met, you don’t need them anymore.”
So take the time to notice the distinction. Maybe you feel bored. But what you need is rest. Or time alone. Some genuine self-nurturing. Maybe some exercise. Or a freaking lunch break. And when you meet the need, the boredom lifts.
Another option is outsourcing.
One of the things that I’ve really stepped into as I’ve started thinking of myself more as a CEO. Delegating and outsourcing are part of my job description.
For me, that can mean bringing on guest writers occasionally so that I can take a week off if I want to. Or letting go of micro-management, especially with tasks I really can’t stand anyway.
And this can go even further: You can create a business that runs like clockwork without you.
In this scenario, feelings about excited or bored with work are almost irrelevant. Because you can go do other things. Start other businesses, take a vacation. Rest, spend time with your family, whatever it might be, but that the business doesn’t need you to run.
The last thing I’ll say is, your business does not exist to excite you or to complete you. Let me explain this more clearly.
You’ve probably heard from relationship experts that we can’t expect our partners to be all things to us.
I can’t expect my husband to be my lover, father of my children, my best friend, the person I do all the things with, the person who always makes me feel great. I mean, in some capacity, and at different times, he’s fulfilling these roles. But I can’t expect him to fulfill my every need and desire all the time.
I think the same is true for our businesses. The millennial generation has positively noticed that these soul-sucking jobs are really kind of crushing our spirits. I don’t want to work like that. I don’t want to live like my parents did and hate what I do. A job can definitely be more than just clocking in and clocking out.
And while I think that’s true, I think the pendulum has sometimes swung too far the other direction, where we expect our businesses to be all things to us and fulfill our every need and desire.
I think clearly I am passionate about helping women create meaningful, fulfilling businesses. But a lot of that is aside from the actual content of the business itself. Not every single aspect of running a business is going to be wildly fulfilling every day.
Last year, my mentor Mariah Koz said, If you’re bored, get a hobby.
What she meant is, your business does not exist to entertain you. Your business exists to make income and to give you something to do with your time. If you’re in a season where you’re bored with work, maybe that’s okay. Maybe it’s okay to say, Yeah, I’m kind of bored right now. And then in my free time, I’m doing things that are really exciting to me. Maybe I’m traveling, learning to play an instrument, going out with friends. Whatever it is for you, whatever lights you up, you can have those things outside of your business and not put so much pressure on your business to be the sole thing that fulfills you.
So hopefully that was helpful. I know I went all across the board there. But I think it is important to think about it from these different perspectives. It’s important to know that there are options and you get to decide. There is no one right way to do business or to handle things when you get bored with work.
Everything works. You just have to figure out what works for you.

So with that, let's dive into today's question.
Jessica Cha 0:52
Hi, Kate, this is Jessica Cha from Basic Sunday. And my one question for is, do you ever get tired or even bored from the projects that you work on? And if so, what do you do to get out of it and kind of refresh yourself?
Kate Kordsmeier 1:04
Well, hello, Jessica. So lovely to hear your voice again. I love this question so much. Because I think as entrepreneurs that's like part of our DNA is that we get bored easily. I know me in particular, I often will set a goal, I'll be all in on it. I'm so passionate about it. And then once I've reached the goal, I'm kind of like, Okay, now what? So this is also really interesting timing, because we were just talking about this on a recent coaching call in a program that I'm in where I'm the client, and it brought up a lot of questions for me to ask myself to, basically, I want to start with saying, to answer your question, simply, yes, I do get bored with doing the same thing over and over again. And sometimes I get bored with the task itself. Sometimes I get bored of the topic. For example, y'all probably know by now that in 2021, I sold my blog Root + Revel. And there were a lot of reasons behind this. But one of the reasons was boredom, essentially, I felt like I had said what I wanted to say on the subject. And that, you know, I had done it for six years. And I was sort of like, I'm ready for the next adventure. And I really love going down rabbit holes of different topics. And as a journalist, you know, I was a journalist for eight years before I started route and rebel, my job was kind of just to like, get paid to explore things I was interested in. And I took that to the blog, okay, I'm really interested in holistic wellness. So I'm going to go down that rabbit hole for ended up being six years, and get so into it and produce tons of content on it and try to help others on the same journey. And I loved it until I did it anymore. And like I said, there's a lot of reasons that I ended up selling, but one of them was this sort of boredom. And so I say that because I think if I had known that that was possible. Like when I first started Root + Revel never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would sell it like I thought this is my dream job, I will do this for ever. And so it wasn't something that I could have anticipated. But then when I obviously did end up selling it, it made me really think about how all future things that I create, how to do so in a way that you are building a sellable asset in the future, whether or not you ever decide to do that. And so there were so many lessons about how to, you know, not make the business so centered on you specifically, or to have other team members or other voices that you're amplifying whether that be just guest posters or frequent contributors, or you have, you know, staff writers who are regularly contributing to your content. There's so many different ways that you could go with it. But that creating a sellable asset where you can remove yourself from the business was something that I really learned last year, and it has, it has really impacted the way that I'm approaching business this year and all businesses moving forward. And so I'm a little bit all over the place with this, but I guess what I'm trying to say is, yes, I do get bored sometimes. And one of the things you can do when you get bored is sell your business. So I sold Root + Revel through a woman named Chelsea who runs her paper route.com This is one of her businesses is buying and selling websites or being the broker for buying and selling websites. And so if you're ever interested, you don't have to have a huge business either. Some sites sell for just a couple $1,000 It can be a really great avenue for extra income and especially when you get bored there is lots of other things to do when you get bored, though, that don't involve actually just like selling or walking away from your entire business. So that is kind of like the extreme end of the spectrum, but just something that, you know, was clearly top of mind for me. Some other things I do when I get bored, are sometimes it's just like, take a break, take a walk, the break can be 10 minutes to take a walk, or your break could be like, I'm gonna be on a hiatus for three months or something and kind of rediscover my passion again, or see where it takes me. So I think taking a break is a great way to do it. And just know that nothing is permanent, you can always come back, you can even say, I'm going to take a break for three months, and then two weeks in be like, I don't need it anymore. I got what I wanted. So I always think of that line from Sex in the City where Carrie says, that's the thing about needs, once they're met, you don't need them anymore. So that just came to mind. So here we go, inner musings from Kate and Sex in the City. Okay, so taking a break is one option. Another option is outsourcing. So one of the things that I've really stepped into as I've started thinking of myself more as a CEO, rather than as, like a freelance writer, or even a blogger is outsourcing to other people. So I kind of mentioned this before, where I was like, you know, you can have staff writers or guest posts or, or things like that. But you can also create a business that runs like clockwork without you. And so when you're bored, you can go do other things, you can start other businesses, you can take a vacation, you could rest, you know, you could spend time with your family, whatever it might be, but that the business doesn't need you to run. And so your feelings about boredom or excitement from your work are almost irrelevant, because you're not necessarily needed in the business. So you could take that, you know, all the way to the extreme of what I just said. Or you could just take it to like, if you publish one post a week, maybe one of those weeks a month, you have somebody else, write the posts for you, or a couple times a month or whatever, I think you kind of get the picture there. So that's another option. The last thing I'll say is, it's kind of counter to everything I just said, which is your business does not exist to excite you, to complete you, sometimes even to fulfill you, I think clearly I am passionate about helping women create meaningful, fulfilling businesses. But a lot of that is like, aside from the actual content of the business itself. So let me see if I can explain this a little bit more clearly, what I'm thinking is kind of like how you've probably heard before, like, we can't expect our partners to be all things to us. So if you're married, I don't expect my husband to be both my lover, you know, father of my children, my best friend, the person who I like, do all the things with like, they can't serve all of these different roles. I mean, in some capacity, obviously, they probably are doing that. But we can't expect them to fulfill our every need and desire, right. And I think the same is true for our businesses. And because the millennial generation has positively, you know, notice, like, hey, these soul sucking jobs are really kind of crushing our spirits. And I don't want to work like that I don't want to live like my parents did and hate what I do. You know, a job can be more than just clocking in and clocking out. And while I think that's true, I think the pendulum has sometimes swung too far the other direction, where we expect our businesses to be all things to us and fulfill our every need and desire. And so something that one of my mentors last year, Mariah Koz said, was essentially, like, if you're bored, get a hobby. So your business does not exist to entertain you. Your business exists to make income and to give you something to do with your time. And so if you're bored with your business, maybe that's okay, maybe it's okay to say, Yeah, I'm kind of bored right now. And so in my free time, I'm doing things that are really exciting to me, maybe I'm traveling, maybe I'm learning to play an instrument, maybe I'm going out with friends all the time, like whatever it is for you, whatever lights you up, you can have those things outside of your business and not put so much pressure on your business to be the sole thing that fulfills you. So hopefully that was helpful. I know, I kind of went all across the board there. But I think it is important to think about it from these different perspectives. And know that there are options and you get to decide like there is no one right way there is no one way to do business or to handle things when you get bored. If you get bored and decide to sell your business great if you get bored and you decide to just take a walk great if you get bored and decide, okay, so I'm bored. I'm going to start learning how To play the piano, great, do what feels right for you. Everything works. You just have to figure out what works for you.
