Vague goals are killing your momentum. Discover how the power of specificity in business helps you grow your audience, attract dream clients, and finally hit income goals.

Let’s talk about one of the most common (and costly) traps I see online business owners fall into: vague goals.
If you’ve ever said:
“I just want more leads…”
“I want to make more money…”
“I need more visibility…”
You’re in good company. Almost every client I’ve coached here at Success with Soul has said some version of this. It’s not because you’re unmotivated. It’s because no one taught us how to think like a CEO.
But here’s the truth: vague goals = vague results.
I had one of those moments recently on a coaching call inside The Room. I asked a client a simple question:
“What’s one thing you’re going to do next month to grow your email list?”
Without missing a beat, she launched into what can only be described as a TED Talk meets the inside of my brain at 2 a.m.—busy, buzzy, and deeply unclear.
“Well, I started a YouTube channel… I’ve got eight emails ready to go… I’m repurposing them onto Instagram, which links to a freebie… then I’m hosting a free workshop… and I’ve got my course too… Did I answer the question?”
Ummm…No. Not even a little bit.
I smiled and said, “Not exactly—but thank you for the context. The question is:
👉 “What is one thing you’re going to do next month to grow your email list?”
At this point I genuinely felt like I was moderating a political debate. All we were missing was a podium and some red lighting.
Just answer the question, ma’am.
So I asked again. Clearly.
“What’s one thing you’re going to do next month to grow your email list?”
She paused.
Then said quietly, “I honestly don’t know.”
And here’s the thing: that wasn’t failure.
It was clarity. The real kind. The “ohhh… I’ve been busy, but not on purpose” kind.
It revealed the hidden pattern I see so often—especially in entrepreneurs: We’re doing all the things… but we’re not being strategic.
And that’s where the power of specificity comes in.
So let’s get to the root: this post will help you harness the power of specificity in business so you can:
Table of Contents
You’re doing all the things—Instagram posts, podcast interviews, maybe even Facebook ads—but you’re still wondering: “Why isn’t this working?”
Here’s why: if your goals sound like:
You’re setting yourself up to feel like you’re failing—even when you’re making progress. That’s the mindf*ck of vague goals.
Specificity changes everything. When you define exactly what success looks like, you stop operating from lack and start creating momentum.
Think of specificity like a GPS for your business.
If you type in “North America,” where the heck will you end up?
🇲🇽 Mexico—sipping pina coladas in Puerto Vallarta?
❄️ Alaska—touring glaciers in snow gear?
Without a specific destination, you could land anywhere. The same is true in your business.
When you don’t know exactly where you’re headed, you end up trying to do all the things—half-heartedly, inconsistently, and without traction. You’re operating from scattered energy, not strategic intention.
And spoiler alert: this doesn’t just apply to your income goals or your launch plans. Specificity starts at the very top of your funnel—with your messaging.
Before you can convert leads into buyers, you have to attract the right people in the first place. That means getting ultra clear on who you’re talking to, what they’re struggling with, and why your solution is the exact fit.
Let’s normalize something real quick: growing your audience is hard when your messaging is too general.
Want proof?
One of my clients came to me saying, “I help women with burnout.” It was noble. True. But also? Too vague to convert.
So we dug deeper. We clarified:
👉 “I help ambitious working moms overcome burnout by reclaiming their mornings and reducing mental overload without guilt.”
Guess what happened next? Her email list grew. Her content got shared. People started saying, “OMG, were you spying on me?”
That’s the power of specificity in your messaging. It turns passive scrollers into subscribers and dream clients. Not because you shouted louder—but because you spoke directly to someone’s lived experience.

Let me be clear: Your vague content is costing you sales.
Your ideal client doesn’t want alignment or freedom or balance unless you define exactly what that means in their world.
Swap out soft-focus phrases like:
…for crystal-clear promises like:
Specificity builds trust. It says: I understand you. I’ve got the solution. Let’s do this. (and if you want help getting ultra specific with your messaging so you can connect with your audience and make more sales, check out our Messaging Made Easy Course!)

Let’s stop overcomplicating this.
Every month, ask yourself:
“How exactly am I going to make money this month?”
If your answer is “sell more coaching” or “launch something”—that’s not a plan. That’s a wish.
Try this instead:
🧠 “Enroll 10 students in my $997 program using a 3-email funnel and Instagram Stories. Launch webinar on September 15. Pitch live. Follow up with 2 nurture emails.”
Now that’s a CEO-level plan. It’s specific, actionable, and trackable. You can reverse-engineer every part of it.
This is what we do inside the Room. We help you go from idea overwhelm to income clarity—without needing to be everywhere or do everything.
If you’re feeling stuck, unmotivated, or behind—it’s probably not because you’re doing it wrong. It’s because you don’t have a specific plan.
The power of specificity in business isn’t just about being more efficient—it’s about being more effective. It’s the difference between spinning in doubt and growing with direction.
When your goals are clear…
When your offers are focused…
When your messaging is laser-sharp…
That’s when your business finally starts to feel like it’s working.
Like, actually working. Not the “I posted a Reel and got 3 likes—two from my cousin and one from my dog’s Instagram account” kind of working.
I’m talking about sipping your (decaf) coffee in the morning, opening your inbox to emails that say, “It’s like you read my mind. Where do I sign up?” Or waking up to a Stripe notification from someone who found you through a piece of content you wrote three weeks ago.
Because when you’re specific—about your goals, your offers, your people—your energy stops leaking in a million directions. You stop spinning in Canva purgatory. You stop doom-scrolling other coaches’ launch plans at 11pm while questioning your entire life path.
You know what you’re doing, and you know why.
Here’s the real reason specificity matters:
Vague goals don’t just stall your revenue—they steal your joy.
They leave you second-guessing every post, every offer, every move.
Clear, specific goals? They put you back in the driver’s seat. They let you say, “I know where I’m going. I know who I’m here to serve. I know how I’ll get there.”
That’s not just business clarity. That’s power.
That’s leadership.
That’s what builds sustainable, soulful success.
When you don’t have to prove your worth with productivity theater…
When you can stop juggling 87 half-finished lead magnets and focus on one clear, compelling message?
That’s freedom.
That’s integrity.
That’s how you run a business that honors your nervous system and your bank account.
Specificity isn’t optional.
It’s not something you get to once everything else is in place.
It is the thing that gets everything in place.
Because until you decide exactly where you’re going, you’re just wandering through the entrepreneurial wilderness—hoping inspiration will strike somewhere between Target and your next anxiety spiral.
So instead of throwing spaghetti at the wall and crossing your fingers…
Pick one thing.
Get specific.
Take action.
Because that’s how you stop guessing—and start growing.
