Welcome to the Success With Soul podcast! Today, guest host Indira is doing a special Client Spotlight with holistic skincare specialist and Incubator client Katie Kus. In this beautifully honest conversation, Katie shares her journey as an entrepreneur and single mom, and why the Incubator’s uniquely supportive, team-focused approach to business coaching for women is what makes success with soul truly possible.
Table of Contents
Sometimes it’s easy for women business owners to get caught up in this idea that in order to be successful, they have to “win” at playing the game that male entrepreneurs have been playing for so long.
So they work harder. They put in gruesomely long hours. They try to contort themselves into the mold of the Marketing Bro who’s making it all happen all the time at the exact same intensity levels, even though our bodies (and everything else in the natural world) operate on cycles.
We know what this looks and feels like: women are burned out, unwell, struggling, and utterly exhausted.
Because here’s something we don’t often take into account: most female business owners are also doing a TON of unpaid emotional and caregiving labor alongside of their businesses.
I’m not saying there aren’t amazing men and dads out there who are egalitarian and hella supportive (I’m married to one!).
What I’m saying is, statistically, in most households, women are still doing more/most of the childcare, kin-keeping, cooking, and cleaning. (source) They’re bearing most of the mental load. They’re spending on average 5.7 hours a day on housework, childcare, and elder care.
So they’ve already got a full-time job alongside whatever job they’re working outside of the home. That extra work is also a part of their lives long before they ever decide to start their own business. And the burden of that labor is often even more keenly felt by single moms.
Historically, women didn’t have to go it alone. There were vast networks of aunties, grandmothers, friends, and neighbors who helped each other.
Perhaps most importantly, inside of those networks, women experienced support and community. They were doing hard work … but they weren’t doing it alone.
So today we’re diving into Katie’s story, and why we embrace the idea of business coaching for women — and why our approach meets women where they are and allows them to be fully themselves inside of the role of entrepreneur.
When Katie arrived at our virtual doors, she was also an escapee from the corporate world. Like me, she felt in her bones that a corporate desk job wasn’t for her. Even if she could be “successful” in it — and she was — she knew she could never be happy.
So she quit her bank manager position in Florida and threw herself fully into being a makeup artist, which she loved at the time. She loved helping women look and feel their best.
Over time, she started to get more and more interested in what was going on under the surface. She wanted to address the root causes of the things that women were using makeup to cover. That led her on a much more emotional and supportive journey into becoming a holistic esthetician.
Kate actually began her work with Team KK inside the Six Figure Blog Academy.
Here’s an interesting thing: she discovered that she really didn’t want to be a blogger (I love that she knew that about herself). But she loved what we were up to. She loved our foundational principles and the fact that she could be a businesswoman and a mom at the same time. So she stuck with us. She still wanted the business coaching — but her vision for her own business was starting to become more clear.
Prior to the pandemic, she left Florida and moved to Istanbul, and this is when we were transitioning from 6FBA into the Success With Soul Incubator. She began the process of growing a virtual business in Istanbul, so when the pandemic and lockdown hit, she was already well on her way.
After the pandemic, she moved back to Oregon with her young daughter. And that began a whole new chapter of her life — as a solo mom, sole provider, and CEO.
She knew she was going to need a support system. And for her, it was a no-brainer: it was time to join the Incubator.
And what’s it been like? Katie says it best:
It’s just been amazing, the support and the growth that I’ve been able to see in my business over these years. … I can submit my plans and they’re gonna give me actionable feedback. It’s my team. I was setting myself up with my support team. A huge catalyst for me was realizing that I don’t want to start my business alone. And I don’t want to build my business alone.
Today, Katie Kus owns and runs Oregon Girl Holistic Skincare.
She is a holistic esthetician with over a decade in the beauty industry. She specializes in gua sha — a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practice that involves using a smooth-edged tool to gently scrape areas of your face and body to get blood and qi (energy) flowing freely for healing and rejuvenation.
She also helps with sensitive skin conditions like cystic acne, eczema, and other autoimmune triggered skin conditions and offers facials that are specifically designed for Oncology + Auto-Immune Support. Her practice is about teaching her clients how to listen to their skin and start taking a more loving, minimal, and intentional approach to skincare.
Through the business coaching she’s received inside the Incubator — along with support, self-care practices, tech-and-systems help, funnel building, masterminding, and regular feedback — she’s been able to build a successful business that incorporates BOTH virtual and in-person elements.
At her brick and mortar business, she sees clients for skincare treatments and facials. In her online biz, she offers gua sha classes and offers 1:1 and group coaching. (You can check out her impressive list of offerings here.)
If we want a society where women of all ages and backgrounds are world-changers and wealth-builders … then we need to make our business coaching fit the needs of a new paradigm.
That’s what Katie found with us, and that’s why her journey looks the way it does.
You can see how Katie has made her business her own, and it doesn’t look like how I do my business … and that’s 100% okay. She’s got a brick-and-mortar; I don’t. She genuinely loves social media; I’ve definitely decided it’s not for me.
But it works for her and her life — and that’s the entire point.
There’s a thousand ways to do this, and you get to pick the way that feels right and abundant and full of soul for you.
If you love working 70 hours a week and that fills you up and truly is life-giving for you — great. We support you. If you want to work 30 hours a week and take 6 weeks off in the summer — awesome. Let’s find a way to make that work. Want to be done by 3pm so you can pick your kids up from school? Perfect. Need a flexible schedule so you can co-parent with an ex? We got you.
There isn’t one way to do business coaching for women, because the entire ethos of feminine energy is suppleness. Flexibility. Openness. Creativity. This is why women are so amazing and why we are built to totally kick ass as entrepreneurs!
It’s what we do best. And when we approach business coaching for women like a supportive tribe — then we can make it through the difficult times without feeling isolated and alone. And when the abundance flows, we can celebrate the fact that we really get to shine in our own ways.
Whether you’re a chef or an artist, have a holistic wellness business like Katie, or you’ve had a therapy or coaching practice for years — or any other type of service business you can imagine! — if you feel called to build and grow your business inside a beautiful container of amazing women …
… we’re doing something we’ve never done before and you’re gonna LOVE it!
You’ll be AMAZED at all you get and what you can accomplish in just 30 days with the right guidance, personalized business coaching from our lead coach Rachel, Q&A sessions with Team KK, and solid community support.
At the end of one month, you’ll have what you need to:

Thanks so much for listening in this week! If you enjoyed this episode, here are some ways you can join our Success with Soul movement:
We just see that the old patriarchal model of doing business is dying — and that’s for the best (for men and women). When you’re talking about business coaching for women, we mean designed by and for women entrepreneurs. We mean honoring cyclical living and not looking at everything as linear. We mean seeing rest as a vital part of success, not a “reward” you give yourself for working 100 hours a week. We mean true balance — meaning, finding the right pace and seasons of labor and rest that work for you, your family, and your wellbeing. We mean cultivating a sprit of courage and creativity, listening to your intuition, and learning to lean into real sisterhood. There’s SO MUCH about how we approach this whole journey that’s seriously night-and-day difference from “traditional” business coaching.
While I love having an online biz, and we definitely specialize in helping women set up super-powered online businesses, one of our mantras is: There’s no one right way. There’s just the way that’s right for you.
Part of our approach to the course, the mastermind, and the specialized business coaching for women inside the Incubator is that we support whatever type of business model you want to use. In person? Sounds good. Online? Great. A little of both (like Katie)? Awesome!
Kate Kordsmeier 0:00
Welcome, welcome. Welcome to the Success with Soul podcast. I'm your host, Kate Kordsmeier. And I am so excited to share this brand new series that we are going to go through over the next seven weeks. It's called behind the team, and you're going to have a chance to meet the core members that make up my current team over at Team KK, we're going to be talking to some friends of mine and other entrepreneurs who have had their own team experiences. And y'all know, vulnerability and transparency are some of my top core values. And I have not been shy about my struggles with learning how to be a leader, and how to hire and onboard and train and retain and create a team culture and make sure we have all of our systems in place and SOPs and project management and communication tools, and how to delegate properly, and how to make sure that everybody is aligned with our core values, and even figuring out what are our core values. It's a lot. And here's what I'm going to say, figuring out how to build an amazing team that works well together that's aligned, that can get things done, that you can truly trust, and that have the same mission of wanting to serve whoever it is that you serve, it's really hard. It's really freaking hard. But it is also so worth it, we have been able to do things in my business that I never dreamed possible and that I never could have done alone because that's the other thing. You cannot do this alone, you cannot create a multiple six figure or seven figure business that impacts dozens or hundreds of people all by yourself. And so learning how to delegate and work with others and be a boss and be a leader. And all the things is so important. And it's such a big part of making your dreams a reality. And really serving your clients to the best of your ability providing them with the most value. If you're trying to do it alone, there's just so much less that you're going to be able to give your impact is just going to be smaller naturally. So let's go big. Let's get vulnerable up in here. It is a little bit scary for me to share this with you guys. But I have a team now that I hope is my team forever. They are amazing, incredibly brilliant, kind, compassionate, talented, thoughtful, skilled, just absolutely incredible people, and I can't wait for you to meet them and hear a little bit about what it's like behind the scenes over at Teak KK. All right, here we go.
Intro 2:52
You're listening to the Success with Soul podcast with Kate Kordsmeier ex-journalist turned CEO of a multi six figure blog and online business. But it wasn't that long ago that Kate was a struggling entrepreneur who lacked confidence, clarity, and let's be honest money. But all those failures, experiments and lessons learned helped Kate create a thriving business that impacts 1000s and brings freedom, flexibility and fulfillment to her life. If you're ready to do the same and make something happen with holistic, soulful, step by step strategies from Kate and other experts, you're in the right place. Here's your host writer, educator, mom, recovering perfectionist, bookworm and sushi connoisseur Kate Kordsmeier
Indira 3:41
Welcome back to the Success with Soul podcast. I'm your guest host Indira with Teak KK and today we're doing another incubator client spotlight. Katie Kus is a holistic esthetician specializing in Gua Sha and inflamed skin conditions. She helps her clients learn how to approach skincare from a place of love and support, how to listen to their skin's needs and use fewer products to get the results they want. She's also a solo mama to a sweet little girl and will look for any excuse to spend time in the mountains. I'm so excited to dive into this episode with y'all today. Let's do it. Hello, hello. Welcome to another episode of Success with Soul. I am Indira your guest host with Tim KK and today we have another incubator client spotlight. And with us is Katie Kus. Katie, welcome to the Success with Soul podcast.
Katie Kus 4:46
Thank you, I am so excited to be here.
Indira 4:49
Likewise, I'm so excited to get to know all about you. So please tell our audience a little bit about who you are.
Katie Kus 4:59
Yeah So like you said, my name is Katie Kus. I am with Oregon girl holistic skincare. I am a Holistic esthetician with over a decade in the beauty industry. I specialize in guasha and sensitive skin conditions like cystic acne, eczema, and other autoimmune triggered skin conditions. And for me, I really just love teaching my clients how to listen to their skin and start taking a more loving, minimal and intentional approach to skincare.
Indira 5:27
I love minimal and intentional approach to skincare. That sounds amazing. So tell us a little bit about your business and your entrepreneurial journey. How did you get here?
Katie Kus 5:43
I mean, Journey is definitely I think a term everybody can use. I started out in the beauty industry, like I said a little over a decade ago, I actually started in the banking industry. So I was a branch manager for one of like the largest branches in Florida, I realized that just was not for me. And I think that's what so many of us, especially incubators have had that shift from like, I just don't want to do corporate. And I just knew I loved making people feel the best about themselves. And so I quit that and just became a professional makeup artist and really went full force and trying to grow and develop that business. And through that though, I started really uncovering a deeper love for really helping women understand and address the actual root causes of what they were trying to cover up with makeup. And really, it took it on so much more like an emotional and supportive journey into becoming a holistic esthetician. So as far as on the business side, I really have utilized Kate as kind of my business guru. Since the beginning, I think I started her six figure blog Academy, when it first came out. I know I was one of like the early entries into it when he was still kind of growing. And with that, I realized I did not want to be a blogger. But I loved her business principles. So much and just her approach to running a business and being able to be a mom and just all the aspects of it, which you know, turned into Success with Soul. And it's for me been crazy. I was living in Florida as an esthetician. And that's when I kind of joined with Kate and moved to Istanbul right before the pandemic. And so that is really where all of Kate's teachings kind of catapulted into, okay, now I'm in a foreign country and her on a global lockdown. So my business even really before I needed to pivot it to virtual, was in that virtual pivoting process. And then the pandemic hit, and I went like full force into really trying to grow. So for two years, I had an exclusively online presence. Just a year ago, though, I moved back to the United States, I'm back in Oregon, where I grew up. And I've opened up my first brick and mortar. And going into this though, I was like, I have so many goals and so many things that I want to do, you know, going through a divorce and kind of becoming the sole provider for my family. I was like, I have to have a support system. And so it was for me a no brainer. And like, I knew this was the time to finally join the incubator. It had been on my manifestation list since she started the incubator. Yeah, I mean, it's just really been a journey. And so here I am now. And it's just been amazing, like the support and the growth that I've been able to see in my business over these years.
Indira 8:39
So you kind of answered my next question, which is, what was your main reason to joining the incubator, like what led you to it? And I know that you said that was on your vision board, but am I understanding that basically, the pandemic kind of accelerated that for you.
Katie Kus 8:56
So I wouldn't say it's a pandemic that accelerated that it was the moving back to Oregon and realizing I need systems and processes, but most importantly, the support of starting my business, I have a couple people that I've worked with over the years that are in the incubator as well. And so seeing their growth, I just I knew that I needed that coming into this. So I just did anything in everything I could to make sure it was going to be possible, because it is an investment. And it was something that, you know, a lot of people at first were like, well, why are you doing this? And again, it was that needing that support and knowing that, you know, I can submit my critiques and they're gonna give me like actionable feedback. You know, it's every little piece of it. It's my team. You know, I really look at it as like the incubator. I was like, I'm setting myself up with my support team. So I think that was that huge catalyst for me was realizing that I don't want to start my business alone. And I don't want to build my business alone.
Indira 9:59
I have to tell you So I love that the idea that the incubator is your team, because in fact, like, I feel like Rachel is 100% on your team and Kate, and everyone, I love that. Wow, I'm actually going to bring that back to our team. I've never really heard it described like that, but it's spot on. So you mentioned that a lot of people said, like, why are you doing this? So what is the biggest risk that you've taken, or the biggest challenge that you've overcome in your business?
Katie Kus 10:34
I think the biggest risk I've taken is really allowing this to be my focus. When I came back to the United States, I had offers of becoming a branch manager and having sort of that, like, guaranteed income and stability, which is really appealing, you know, in when you're in a life transition. But I think for me, it was just knowing what I have to offer is going to help so many people, and so just not falling back on a crutch, but just taking those steps and going for it.
Indira 11:10
That is definitely I knew that can feel really scary. So I commend you for that. Because I think that that's probably one of the most challenging things about being an entrepreneur, deciding I'm gonna go this route, even though this one seems a little safer. So kudos to you. So what would you say? Like, what immediate impact did being inside of the incubator have on your business or the biggest impact in general.
Katie Kus 11:43
So the immediate impact for me was, you know, I was coming back and I, it was tough, you know, I moved back to the United States with four suitcases and my kid. So I had no systems in place, even just in like my personal life and trying to find an anchor. So like, it's something so small, I think most people don't realize the impact of it. But like the mindful parenting planners, and really like the whole cyclical living, not for me, it's something cycle thinking it's something I teach in my my own practice with clients. But that's where it comes to more of like, hormonal, but really like the cyclical living lifestyle, and how Kate breaks it down, makes it so easy. And that was the first thing I clung to. So really, my first two months in the incubator was at a turtle pace, because I was just like, clinging on to getting that system in place for myself, where I knew I'd have a rhythm. And I think that was the biggest impact for me was being able to have something tangible, that just helps me kind of organize my thoughts organize the direction I want to go into, because it's overwhelming. I mean, owning your own business, and all the options that there are to do. It's so overwhelming. And so I think, you know, the masculine to feminine model really simplified that for me and gave me permission to start exploring into the other areas of my business. And now for me, the biggest impact overall has just been how quickly I've been able to start turning content around how quickly I've been able to start growing and developing my offers, which were things that were always huge roadblocks for me. But now I just tell the group like help, this is a roadblock or here's where I'm stuck. And I'm immediately getting responses from Teak KK from other people in the incubator. And so it really has started to catapult the speed at which I'm able to start developing things for my business.
Indira 13:41
Heck, yeah, I love that I'm really proud of the community that we have fostered inside the incubator and hearing you is a testament to that. So I love that.
Kate Kordsmeier 13:57
Hey, hey, Kate here, pausing for a quick interruption. I just wanted to talk about something that's been on my heart lately, and that is that I feel like sometimes in this online media landscape, the digital world, that human connection is sometimes missing. I don't know if you feel that too. But one of the things we've changed in my business to account for this is that we're doing discovery calls. Because sometimes you really just want to get on the phone with somebody a real human being, and have an actual conversation where you can talk about where you are in your business, what your hopes, fears and dreams might be, what you would do if you knew you couldn't fail, and how maybe we could help you or somebody else could help you. You might just need a little bit of guidance or that little push or a confidence boost, or maybe you have questions that you just need answered before you make a decision. Sometimes we feel like we just need more information before we're ready to take that next step. And if that resonates at all with you, I would love for you to book a call with my team. Just head over to Kate kordsmeier.com/talk and book of Free 30 minute discovery call today, we can't wait to hear from you. That's Kate Kordsmeier/talk.
Indira 15:10
So how was your relationship to your business? Like, how has that changed over like the last six to 12 months? Like, do you spend less time on social media? Do you get more organic traffic now? Like, do you have more passive income streams like all of that?
Katie Kus 15:26
So I think how it's changed for me, is, so how my relationship with my business has changed really in like the last six months, six to 12 months, is, I actually I genuinely have so much pride as like being an owner and a boss and my business, where before, I still was kind of looking at it, not as like a hobby, but I didn't have that like CEO mindset. And so now I really do have that like confident, CEO mindset. And things are easier I do. I genuinely actually love social media. That's where I connect with most of my clients. And that's where I get a lot of my traffic. But I now have a system in place where I'm not spending all day every day on it. And even with like my newsletter, that is something I have hated, I've hated, I've hated I've hated and I love my newsletter now, because we did recently what in our co working day that we had with the incubator, it was just an hour, but it was the most productive hour, I've had an email ever, you know, it was everybody was bouncing ideas off of each other. We had Rachel in there, helping us with different taglines. And I managed to get four emails written in one hour, which normally takes me like an entire month to get that done. So So were you
Indira 16:47
able to batch your email? So was that like, a month worth of emails? Yeah.
Katie Kus 16:51
Yeah, I've asked that. I've asked a month's worth of emails. And yeah, it was during our co working session. And it was amazing. So it's, like I said, I think the speed in which I'm able to start producing things. I'm really seeing that you know, and a few more months from now, I'm going to have so much more space freed up because I'm creating these automations now, app so
Indira 17:15
frickin lately, you well, maybe in less than then you imagine. Like once you have that in place. It's the initial setup. That takes time. But once that's in place, it's from there.
Katie Kus 17:29
Yeah. I mean, I had no idea that it could be this easy.
Indira 17:34
Oh, I love it. So what's one word that you would use to describe your experience inside of the incubator?
Katie Kus 17:43
Phenomenal. Really. I mean, it's like if you have to use one word, it's just yeah, it's surpassed all expectations.
Indira 17:51
Wow, I love that.
Katie Kus 17:53
And I have pretty good patients because I know what Kate brings to the table. So
Indira 17:57
ah, I love Kate two I was I was a KKfan. Before I joined Teak KK like I had listened to her podcast for like a year. So I am totally girl fanning over Kate as well. Before I joined Team KK. So this part of the interview, which is my favorite part, this is the lightning round. So we ask the same questions to everyone. Don't overthink it, just whatever comes to mind. So the first question is, what's your favorite way to make time for self care while running your own business?
Katie Kus 18:32
My favorite way is my evening ritual. So I have a very simple, it's my skincare ritual, because it's very grounding, very soothing. And it's very simple. And it's my little five to 10 minutes that I get all by myself to just kind of ground myself for the day. So my skincare ritual,
Indira 18:48
Oh, I love that. And I love that use the word ground yourself for the day. What's one tool or strategy like maybe the Eisenhower matrix or cycle thinking which you've mentioned that you use to help with time management
Katie Kus 19:02
100% cycles thinking, I once I got into really understanding how each phase of my cycle fits in it's just made it so much easier for me and I'm not working an uphill battle. I'm working in flow, which is perfect.
Indira 19:21
Love that working in flow. So what's the most powerful business mindset entrepreneurial book that you've ever read? You know, this is the one that you like reference again and again, and has made the biggest difference in your life.
Katie Kus 19:35
Everything is figured out double or it's the Marie Forleo everything is figure out double or anything is figure out double, but it's the one that has the little orange on it. But I've used that book for so many things of just like the determination of like, we can figure this out. And honestly, that was the principle that I was using to get into the incubator. So I will figure this out. I you know, like I said, I came back to the United dates and not not all I anticipated. But yeah, I was like, I will figure out how to get into this. So yeah, everything is figured out double.
Indira 20:07
Oh, I love that. So in terms of mindset, what is your favorite quote or mantra or affirmation? That you know when things get tough and you feel like giving up? This is your go to.
Katie Kus 20:22
So I actually have it written on my little board back here it says those who are certain of an outcome can afford to wait without anxiety.
Unknown Speaker 20:31
I love that. Yeah. It's Gabby
Katie Kus 20:33
Bernstein. Oh, okay.
Indira 20:36
Marie Forleo GAVI Kate, love it. So, as you know, the name of this podcast is Success with Soul. What does Success with Soul mean to you?
Katie Kus 20:49
Success with Soul for me means being able to do something that is, and I know Kate uses this phrase so much, but it works. And it's so true, but heart centered. It's for me being able to do something I love every day that makes people feel like a better version of themselves and makes people feel supported and cared for and loved. And that's without having to compromise who I am to be able to provide that.
Indira 21:18
Yes, love it. Oh, my goodness, this has been so wonderful. It's been so great to get to know you a little better. let our audience know where they can find you. Yeah, so
Katie Kus 21:33
there's a couple places I've mentioned earlier, Instagram is kind of where all the action is at. And that is Oregon girl skincare. And you can also catch me on my website, which is just Katie Kus, which is Ka ti e k u s.com. So those are kind of the two biggest areas. Like I said, the newsletter is going to start rolling out for you all. So you can definitely join that I have a little freebie for you, which is like a four step skincare ritual. So those are the best places.
Indira 22:03
Wonderful. And we'll make sure to add everything to our show notes so everyone can find you. And definitely sign up for Katie's freebie do not want to miss it's a four step nightly ritual. And it's free for our audience. So thank you so much for being with us here today. We cannot wait for this episode to go live. And for everyone to have a chance to get to know more about you and the wonderful work that you are doing. helping women with their skin.
Katie Kus 22:40
Thank you so much. It was my pleasure. I wanted this for so long. So I really appreciate the time as well.
Indira 22:46
Yeah. Okay, great, thank you.
Kate Kordsmeier 22:53
