If you’re wondering how to get traffic to your website and find great leads without social media, the solution might be right at your fingertips: a blog.
Table of Contents
One of the biggest questions I get from women business owners is some version of wanting to know how to get traffic to your website. And it’s a critical question, since understanding how to organically attract the right people to your site is hands-down the best way to create a sustainable business.
When entrepreneurs want to know how to do this, I will most often ask if they have a blog.
Now, when most people hear the term “blogger,” they likely have a particular image from the early 2000s of someone furiously posting day after day.
And yes, that focus on long-form written content in a specific post format (much like this one!) has long been associated with what it is to be a blogger.
Perhaps that’s why a lot of entrepreneurs, especially course creators and coaches, think that blogging “isn’t for them.”
They maybe don’t love writing that much. It’s not their jam. Or they’d rather be generating other types of content. Or they’ve bought into the idea that the only way to effectively promote their business and brand is to be on social media every day, even if they secretly kind of hate it.
I think that the vast majority of business owners don’t fully understand what a blog is in 2022 — or how it can be the key to financial and social freedom in their business. Because the truth is, when you know how to get traffic to your website, without needing social media, you’ve seriously unlocked next-level potential for you and your biz.
If you follow me at all, you’ve likely heard me say, oh, a thousand times:
Every website is a blog, and every business needs one.
That’s because a blog is so much more than just a daily/weekly written post (although it certainly can be that).
Today, a blog refers to any content on your website that is:
When you let that re-frame sink in, it completely shifts what it means to have a blog and what it means to be a blogger.
So if you love writing, like I do, and you feel satisfaction when you research, compose, and edit — then go for it!
But there are also many other ways to use blogging as a tool to be more visible to people who are looking for a business just like yours, to serve the people you want to serve, and to free up tons of time and valuable emotional energy.
In addition to the traditional post-writing, you can explore all kinds of visual, video and audio content to share with your audience.
For example:
So if you’re, say, a nutritional coach, you could offer brief, free tutorials on things like meal planning, batch cooking, or healthy meal delivery services.
Then share the audio clips, show notes, and transcripts on your site and use sign-ups to grow your email list. (You can see an example of a podcast blog post here).
This serves a double purpose — to increase that know/like/trust relationship with your audience and share stories that can inspire your target market to take action.
This can generate interest, give people a peek into your style, establish yourself as an authority, and show them what you do. Plus, you can repurpose content, which I talk about in the next section.
The key with all of these, regardless of the medium you choose — I’ll touch on this more later — is to make sure you know your way around basic search engine optimization (SEO) techniques in order to maximize your searchability with every post.
When you do this, your blog is doing work for you in the background, all the time. And as you’ll see, that in-the-background work will free up a LOT of time, resources, and energy for you.
If you are a business owner of any kind (course creator, coach, therapist, consultant, agency, etc.) and you’re looking for a way to have your website traffic be as organic and sustainable as your morning coffee — without having to spend hours on social media — then it’s time for you to consider ramping up your blog.
So why am I such a big fan of blogs? Let me count the ways …
Blogging, or producing free content online, is the fastest way to show up in Google search results, making you findable by your ideal client. This is when people are the hottest leads, because they are actually searching for you and ready to take action.
Compare this to what’s known as “interruptive marketing” like Facebook ads or even regular IG posts, where you’re trying to pull people away from what they’re already doing online. It’s a game changer to actually be the exact thing people are looking for!
And huge bonus: with decent SEO, you don’t have to be an influencer to attract steady traffic to your site and build your customer base. You don’t need thousands of followers, or even hundreds. With the right training, you can learn how to get traffic to your website, reliably and sustainably. You can do what you love, focus on offering great things to your ideal customer, and never have to pose for an awkward selfie again. Can you feel your body relaxing at the thought?!

Most people don’t know this, because they still have that image in their minds of having to write long posts every say — but blogging is actually relatively passive. On social media, you have to start over every single day. And if you get behind, you lose the momentum of your earlier labor, because engagement drops off and you get lost in the algorithms.
When you figure out how to be a blogger in a way that’s a great fit, you can create as little as 2-4 posts per month and then sit back and let the SEO juice do the work for you. You can take a break without losing all of your hard work.
If you’re a working mom, or have other pressing things in your life, you’re dealing with health issues, or you know you need more time to genuine self-care, there is every reason in the world to learn how to get traffic to your website and build your biz in fewer working hours per week.
The shelf life for a social media post is … *runs calculation* … 24 hours. That’s it. You’re reinventing the attention-wheel every day. By contrast, Google rewards longevity, so having a history of quality content on your site can help with rankings.
As an example, I had a blog post that earned thousands of dollars every month in affiliate revenue that I wrote 3 years ago, and when traffic to the topic spiked during the Pandemic, it actually brought in over $42,000 in 3 months. And with just a few minor updates to content to keep it current, I can get that steady stream of organic traffic coming to my site. That’s a huge ROI.
So if you’re hungry for a way to grow your business without the hassle and stress of social media, a blog is absolutely the way to go. It’s how to get traffic to your website — without worrying about how many posts to make, feeling pressure to respond to comments, or dealing with trolls (ick).
The beauty of your website is that you can monetize the platform itself, adding additional revenue streams — like affiliate marketing (my fave), ads, sponsors, eBooks, tiny offers, and more. So once you master how to get traffic to your website through effective SEO, you can then turn around and use multiple ways to earn income, in addition to your core offer.
Look, I know that pretty much nothing in life is guaranteed, and part of our spiritual journey is learning how to be okay with that reality.
That said — if you’ve got a way to build some genuine security into your biz, it only makes sense to take advantage of that. (Hey, the Universe says we should accept uncertainty, not that we should create it.)
And if you’re relying on social media to build your business, that’s a pretty big unnecessary risk on a number of levels.
Why? Because ads aren’t reliable. Algorithms change. Facebook could go under. iOS changes, third-party cookies change. If you put all your eggs in one basket, what happens when that basket disappears? Plus ads are complicated and expensive. If you have more time than money, blogging is your best friend.
Plus, if you just want to diversify, blogging can help. Because — bonus! — you get to be a blogger in pretty much any way you want.
Ads can be a great complement to organic traffic, but if you don’t have free content (whether on your site or through your email list), it’s going to be incredibly difficult to nurture your leads. Solid, SEO’d blog content is how to get traffic to your website. Plus, it helps your ideal client get to know, like, and trust you — and ultimately buy from you. Free content can do that.
Blogging shortens the sales cycle because a) you’ve already warmed people up and nurtured them, and b) you don’t have to sell so hard because people already know, like, and trust you from the value you’ve given them in your posts.
Here’s something most business owners don’t realize: they do not own the content they post every day. Facebook/Instagram or TikTok owns it. If the platforms crash, or go under, all your followers are just … lost.
Sure, you could download and repost content. But consider this: where would you post it? How about … on your own website, which you own?
With your website, from Day 1, it’s yours. You control what you say. All the content on your site, whether it’s written, audio (podcast), video (Youtube) or otherwise — it’s yours.
You’ll hear me say this a lot: Don’t build your business on rented land.
When you choose to be a blogger, you get the advantage of major repurposing potential. What I mean by that is you create something once and then repurpose the shit out of it.
For example, you can have a VA go through your blog posts and turn them into social media posts (no selfies required, unless you want to!). You can add captioned images with keywords. You could record a podcast episode with video on, publish it to Youtube, and then put everything into a blog post — and you’ve just fed 3 birds with 1 seed.
Again — I ask you to just consider the efficiency of this compared to social media, where you have to generate something new every single day, and you maybe cross-post it, but there’s literally no guarantee that it will reach even a fraction of the people who are intentionally following you, let alone people who don’t know who you are or where to find you.
Look, you could say I’m biased towards blogs. I totally am. And I’m not a fan of social media, for so many reasons: it’s time-consuming, its results are unreliable at best (unless you are an influencer with tens of thousands of followers), and it’s bad for our emotional and spiritual well being.
But hear me out: blogs are verifiably a better business move. They are how to get traffic to your website that’s organic, high-quality, and high-converting. They get more leads, and the stats to prove it.
Someone gets to your site by finding your blog post, and then you get them to opt-in to your email list where you can nurture them further and ultimately sell them your offer. And instead of showing up all day every day on social media, you spend a couple hours a month putting out new blog posts, and after a while, this all starts happening on auto-pilot, in the background.
Yes, it takes some time. Yes, it takes some strategy — you might have to invest in an SEO book or course to get started and get the basics down. But in the end, it’s so so worth it.
It’s how you attract the right people (so you don’t have to spend a fortune on ads).
It’s how to get traffic to your website that’s already warm (because they’re literally searching for you).
Trust me: you’ll be amazed at how effective it is at boosting your visibility, increasing passive revenue, and decreasing the need to be on social media. That’s a win-win-win.
