Are you wondering how to design a logo for your new blog or business? You’ve come to the right place. In this post we show you how quick and easy it is to design a blog logo using 99Designs.
So you’re ready to start a blog, eh?
Congrats!! You’re making one of the best decisions for your career, and your life! The freedom, flexibility, fulfillment (and crazy $$ potential!) you’ll get from running a blogging business is unmatched.
I should know–I started my first blog, Root + Revel, at the end of 2015 which I later sold. Before selling it, I was earning nearly a quarter of a million dollars per year from it, all while working less than 40 hours per week, making a positive impact in other people’s lives, and doing something that truly feeds my soul.
I’m so stinking excited that you’re ready to do the same. But listen, I get it. Getting started can be overwhelming. You might even be wondering what you should blog about.
Don’t worry–I gotchyou. Take our FREE quiz to determine what kind of blog you should start from our curated list of the 6 types of profitable blogs. Then learn how to start a blog to see what steps you need to take next (think domain name, web hosting, etc.).
After you’ve completed those steps, it’s time to get started designing your blog. And with that comes logo design. And if your niche is in food, food blog logo design is something to look into as well. Branding is so important when it comes to creating a profitable blog, so I really encourage you to take your time with this step and really think through your choice.
Of course you can always do a rebrand, but it’s a big undertaking and wouldn’t it be great to get started on the right foot from Day 1, rather than constantly having to redo things as you progress because you didn’t take the time to do them right from the beginning?
Yeah, I thought so! 😉
Now here’s the good news: designing a blog logo is actually super easy, whether you choose to DIY your logo or hire a designer. When I first started my blog, I created a VERY simple logo in Canva and that logo lasted me the first 3 years of my blog. Then we did a HUGE rebrand and redesign of the entire site and I hired a professional. It was worth it, but I’ll be honest, it was SUPER expensive.
So when I launched successwithsoul.co, I knew I wanted to find the happy medium. And I found that with 99Designs.
With 99Designs, you can opt to work 1:1 with a designer, or host a contest to get multiple designs from many different designers.
I chose to host a design contest using their Gold package. You can do a contest for as little as $299, but the Gold package ($899) promised to provide me with ~90 designs (compared to 30) from Mid- and Top-Level designers only.
I thought it might be helpful to walk you through the process and share what it was like to design a blog logo with 99Designs‘ contest.
OK, so first step: I gave my project the title of “Holistic Bohemian Logo Needed for Soulful Entrepreneur”, something I felt would be descriptive and would attract the kinds of designers I was looking for.
99Designs starts by asking you to select your favorite logos of some of their premade designs, see screenshot below:
I then filled out their design brief, where you answer some questions about your logo and style preferences. See screenshots below to see exactly what I said:
I also gave them this note to further clarify what I was looking for:
“I’m looking for a clean and simple logo that incorporates a soulful, spiritual vibe. I’m drawn to logos that have a unique scripty/handwritten font incorporated and maybe an image/graphic of something lunar, astrological, watercolor, or sacred geometry. My other website (rootandrevel.com) has a botanical theme, so I’d like to avoid that and instead choose something that complements it without being too similar. I lean toward black/white and soft neutral colors.”
I then chose to upload examples of other logos I liked so the designers could really get a sense of my style and what I was looking for. This is an optional step, but I think it’s THE MOST important by far. Here are the example logos I shared with them for inspiration:
I ended up getting 83 design choices from 17 different designers. Some were awesome, some were horrible (I’ll be honest). But there were enough good ones that were close to what I wanted, so I messaged back and forth with several of the designers as I wanted to see their designs with slightly tweaked colors or fonts.
I ended up giving them the exact font I wanted to use for the logo (it’s called Plakias).
Here are screenshots of some of the process and some of my favorite choices at the beginning:
I wound up choosing the winner from a designer called AK-Studios™ and couldn’t be happier with my decision. It took us about a dozen messages back and forth to get the colors just right (I shared a color palette with him and then we continued to tweak it), but fairly quickly we got to the finished product I dreamt of. Here’s the final logo I ended up with:
I also received all of the individual elements that make up my logo (like the watercolor and the gold triangle) so I can use them to create other branded graphics, like our quote cards on Instagram:
I couldn’t be happier with my new logo design. What do you think?
