Tired of generic online business advice? Here are 5 counter-intuitive lessons that helped me build a profitable, sustainable business, without hustle or social media burnout.

If you’re trying to grow an online business, your inbox is probably full of advice telling you exactly how you’re doing it wrong.
And somehow, all of this is supposed to feel aligned.
I’m going to be honest with you: most of the “best practices” I followed early on made my business harder… not more profitable, not more sustainable, and definitely not more enjoyable.
Over the last decade, I’ve built a high-profit, low-maintenance online business by doing a lot of things “backwards.” I don’t post on social media. I sell directly to my email list almost every single day. I let people unsubscribe. I create offers after people buy them. And I’ve made consistent, daily sales without living on the content hamster wheel.
This post is for you if you’re tired of forcing strategies that don’t fit, and you’re ready to rethink what it actually means to grow an online business.
Here are five counter-intuitive truths I’ve learned by testing, experimenting, and paying close attention to what actually works.
Table of Contents
Let’s start with the one that makes people the most uncomfortable.
Despite what you’ve been told, social media is not a requirement for growing an online business. It’s one option, but it’s far from the most reliable one.
For years, I watched entrepreneurs (myself included) pour hours into Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok… only to get inconsistent reach, unpredictable results, and a whole lot of burnout.
So I stopped asking, “How do I show up more?”
And started asking, “What actually builds assets I own?”
That’s when everything changed.
Instead of chasing algorithms, I focused on:
Here’s the question I want you to sit with:
Why keep doing something that isn’t working, just because everyone else is doing it?
If you want to grow an online business sustainably, start investing in platforms and systems that don’t disappear tomorrow.
This goes against almost everything we’re taught.
Most entrepreneurs are told to:
I do the opposite.
I don’t create offers until people buy them.
Some of my most successful programs started as:
That’s it.
Selling first does a few powerful things:
If no one buys? That’s not failure, it’s feedback. And it’s far cheaper than spending months creating an offer in a vacuum.
If you want to grow an online business without burning out, stop building in isolation. Let your audience lead.
This one makes people nervous… so let’s slow it down.
I’m not saying you need to wake up every morning and write a brand-new sales email.
What I am saying is this:
Your email list should be doing consistent sales work on your behalf.
Most entrepreneurs send a lot of “value” emails… and almost no clear invitations to buy. Then they wonder why their list isn’t converting.
Hope is not a strategy.
Instead, I build evergreen email sequences that:
That way, every subscriber (no matter when they join) gets clarity on how I can help them. Selling becomes a system, not a performance.
And yes, you might be surprised how many sales come from simply being clear and consistent.
Let’s talk about unsubscribes.
I don’t fear them. I welcome them.
My philosophy is simple: unsubscribe or buy.
A massive email list full of people who will never engage or purchase isn’t an asset, it’s noise. A smaller, aligned list that trusts you and takes action is far more valuable.
When you stop trying to keep everyone happy:
If you want to grow an online business that actually supports you, stop chasing vanity metrics and start optimizing for alignment.
I love ideas. I have a lot of them.
But success hasn’t come from chasing every spark, it’s come from choosing one direction and committing to it.
At one point, I realized I was trying to do everything:
So I chose focus.
I simplified my strategy, put blinders on, and stopped trying to do it all at once. That decision created momentum faster than any new idea ever did.
If you’re trying to grow an online business, understand this:
Momentum doesn’t come from starting ten things.
It comes from finishing one.

If you want a behind-the-scenes look at how I apply these principles in real life, I share it all inside The $1K/Day Experiment.
It’s where I document:
Just a peak at my real decisions and real data… in real-time.
If this post resonated and you want help implementing these ideas, here’s a few other ways I can help you:

The Room 👉 Ongoing coaching, accountability, and community for entrepreneurs who want to stop consuming and start implementing.
You don’t need more tactics.
You need fewer, better ones.
Most online business advice is designed for someone else’s nervous system, life circumstances, and business model.
The businesses that last, the ones that feel profitable and humane, are usually built by people willing to question the rules they were handed.
So I’ll leave you with this:
What’s one piece of “how to grow an online business” advice you’ve been following that doesn’t actually fit you anymore?
You’re allowed to choose a quieter, simpler, more sustainable path.
Sometimes, that’s the most strategic move of all.
By focusing on email marketing, SEO, partnerships, and systems you own… rather than relying on algorithms.
Yes, when you’re transparent. Selling first validates demand and saves time, energy, and burnout.
Clear selling builds trust. Confusing people doesn’t.
No. A smaller, aligned list converts better than a large disengaged one.
Identify what’s already working—and double down there before adding anything new.
