Most entrepreneurs start their own business for the freedom they think it will give them.
While this does bring you freedom in some sense — you’re the boss and you get to call all the shots — too many business owners find themselves hustling for their business 24/7/365.

Female business owners delay starting families (sometimes until it’s too late). If they do have children, maternity leave for small business owners is often considered impossible — so they take little, if any maternity leave.
They don’t have the time to take care of sick loved ones, or aging parents — and forget about any real self-care! All of this driving and overwork leads to burnout and all sorts of ill effects on your physical, mental and spiritual health.
According to the Harvard Business Review, women in the US continue to make 78% of the male wage. These days, only a small portion of this wage gap is attributed directly to discrimination (getting paid less for doing the same job or being denied access to jobs, education, or capital based on gender).
The biggest contributor to this wage gap for women is due to child-bearing/child-rearing, and more specifically the lack of support for working mothers — in the workplace and in our society at large (which could certainly be considered a form of discrimination).
In other words: the fact that women can’t take the time off they need to care for their families has a direct negative impact on their ability to earn money, support themselves, or share their gifts with the world through their businesses.
These issues only got worse with the pandemic: women employed outside the home left the workforce by the millions, and women entrepreneurs faced unprecedented challenges.
Does this make you a little mad? Or maybe a lot? It frustrates the hell out of me.
So let’s do something about it! Let’s build our own businesses and our own circles of influence where women are supported — where mothers are supported and the feminine is honored.
There’s a way to do this — and starting might be easier than you think.
The key to a business that supports your life in a holistic way begins with working to improve operational efficiency.
I get it: “operational efficiency” is not a particularly sexy phrase — it sounds like something you’d say about an assembly line — but what it makes room for is full, vibrant, exciting, and oh-so-amazing.
Very simply put, operational efficiency is about setting up systems and processes that allow you to create more revenue, and more growth, with less effort.
When you improve operational efficiency in your business, you’ll increase your revenue, which is of course a huge perk.
But today I also want to focus on the less effort part: how improving operational efficiency creates space in your business for that time freedom you’re craving.
And I feel like it’s important to say: this isn’t just about vacations — although you should absolutely be able to take real time off to rest, restore, and replenish your creative energy.
It’s about creating a business that’s also sane — meaning, it truly fits into your real, whole life.
That means you shouldn’t have to choose between having a needed surgery and running your business. You shouldn’t have to close down if your parent or child gets sick. Maternity leave for small business owners shouldn’t be something we scoff at.
Being an entrepreneur who cares for your physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing should be seen as normal … because it is.
