Learn the behind-the-scenes secrets about how to make time for your dreams and goals from these successful women entrepreneurs who have learned how to focus on the right things–instead of trying to do all the things.
It’s the end of the year, which means many of us are thinking about our goals for the new year. We all have big dreams and aspirations, but one of the most common challenges I hear from people about why they haven’t started their business yet or aren’t further along is, “I don’t have the time.”
This is often a very limiting belief, something that holds us back that is not actually true. But it feels so true, doesn’t it?
Here’s the truth: we all have the same number of hours in a day. So how are other people able to do it?
This episode is super special, because I asked a handful of my favorite online entrepreneurs to answer the question, “How do you make time for your dreams?”
The women featured on this episode don’t pretend that they do it all. They’re not people who are hustling their asses off until they’re sick and completely burnt out. And they’re also not people who wear busy like a badge of honor.
These women also don’t let the “I don’t have time” excuse hold them back. Instead, they focus on the things that matter. Remember: it’s not about doing more things. It’s about doing the right things.
As Tom Brady says, “Focusing on the wrong things essentially means you’re getting better at getting worse.” Drop the mic! To me, this explains so much of why so many businesses fail: because we’re constantly getting better at getting worse. Because we’re not making time for the right things.
In today’s amazing lineup, we have:

Happy New Year. This is Success with Soul. And I'm your host, Kate Kordsmeier. And today's episode is super juicy, because I have asked a handful of my favorite online entrepreneurs to answer the question, how do you make time for your dreams? And I know that this is maybe like a cheesy question, but it feels super relevant as we're heading into a new year. Because so many times when I talk to aspiring entrepreneurs or bloggers, the biggest reason they give for why they haven't started their business yet, or why they aren't more successful this point is because they don't have time. And I have found that that is often a very limiting belief, something that holds us back that is not actually true. But it feels so true, doesn't it? We're all so busy. Oh my gosh, we're all so busy. But we all have the same number of hours in a day. You've seen the meme before, right? Beyonce's day is also only 24 hours? How are people able to do it? The people that I asked this question too, I wanted to ask them specifically because they're not people who come out and say, I do it all. They're not people who are hustling their asses off until they're sick and completely burnt out. And they're also not people who were busy like a badge of honor. These women don't let the I don't have time excuse hold them back. Instead, they focus on the things that matter. Because remember, it's not about doing more things. It's about doing the right things. So how can you make time for your dreams? Is it giving up Netflix 30 minutes a day or taking Instagram off your phone so that you can actually get some work done? How have the people who have done what you want to do and come before you? How have they made time for their dreams? That's the question we're answering today. And I want to give a little bit more of a preface to this because I was recently listening to the armchair expert with Dax Shepherd. And Tom Brady was on. And I thought at first Well, I'm not gonna listen to Tom Brady, I'm not super into football, I don't really care, whatever. But you know, he's not bad to look at. So I turned on the episode, which of course, I didn't even get to look at him. But then listening to the episode, and he started talking about how focusing on the wrong things, essentially means you're getting better at getting worse. And this was like such a lightbulb moment. To me, it just explained so much of why, why so many businesses fail, because we're constantly getting better at getting worse, because we're not making time for the right things. And Tom Brady's case, he was talking about how prep and recovery is just as important as performance, right? So it's not just about going out on the field and playing the actual football game. It's what he does before to prepare, and then what he does after to recover. And this is also true in business. So I'm really excited today to share with you a few of my mentors and peers in the online business world who have achieved amazing things. And they've done it all despite having the same number of hours in a day as we all do. So we've got Amy Porterfield in the house, then Selena Soo is coming in and sharing how she makes time for her dreams and Lattice Hudson is rounding us out here on this amazing new year's Roundtable, sharing how she also makes time for her dreams. Let's do it. You're listening to the Success with Soul podcast with Kate Kordsmeier ex journalists turned CEO of a multi six figure blog and online business. But it wasn't that long ago that Kate was a struggling entrepreneur who lacked confidence, clarity, and let's be honest money. But all those failures, experiments and lessons learned helped Kate create a thriving business that impacts 1000s and brings freedom, flexibility and fulfillment to her life. If you're ready to do the same and make something happen with holistic, soulful, step by step strategies from Kate and other experts, you're in the right place. here's your host, writer, educator, Mom, recovering perfectionist, bookworm and sushi connoisseur Kate Kordsmeier. All right, so
up first, we've got the one and only Amy Porterfield. If you're unfamiliar with him work. She is the host of the online marketing Made Easy podcast and she also created a digital course Academy and list builder society, both of which are online courses. Amy has also actually been on our podcast before head back to Episode 21 to listen to Amy talk about how to transition from a nine to five job into a profitable digital online course business model. Alright, Amy, take it away. Tell us how do you make time for your dreams?
Amy Porterfield 5:34
Hey there, Amy Porterfield here. So when Kate asked me the question, how do I make time for my dreams, I had to really think about this one. And after a lot of thought the one thing that kept coming up over and over again, is that I am someone who invest in my dreams. And by that I mean, since day 111 years ago when I started my online business actually 12 years ago, meaning I was still at my nine to five corporate job. And I started to invest in myself. I bought my first two digital courses, one about Facebook marketing. And what about video marketing, before I even left my corporate job. Now each program was $1,000. And I didn't tell anybody, because I thought my friends and the people that I worked with would think I was crazy for spending that much money on a digital course. And not knowing the instructors and not having any clue what the heck I was going to be doing with my future. But I knew that I needed to educate myself. And I needed to be taught by people that have gone before me and have had the success that I want. And that is truly how I've always been in my business how I've lived my life. In terms of going after my dreams, I find people who have what I want to create in my business. And I figure out how they've done it. And one of the best ways to do that is if they have programs or masterminds or mentorships, I find a way to get in there. So after I bought those first two digital courses before I even left my corporate job, when I finally did leave my job, the first thing I invested in was a $17,000 mastermind, and it was with Marie Forleo. And she had this amazing business, she was even just getting started. But her business was a lot bigger than mine because I had no business yet. And so I looked at what she was doing online, I looked at how she was running her business what she was creating. And I thought I want to do that in my own business. And so she had a mastermind, and I joined it. Now I could not afford it. Thank God, she had a payment plan. And I had to hustle every single month to get clients so that I could pay for the mastermind I was in. So that first year of being on my own, I wasn't making hardly any money, any money I was making. I was reinvesting into this mastermind, but to be around other entrepreneurial women and to learn about what they were doing in their business and to learn from someone who's gone before me. That was priceless education, you will never get that in college. Like I put myself in a situation where I was surrounded by other aspiring entrepreneurs. And it was led by somebody who had great success already. So I invested. And I do that every single year, 11 years in, I just paid for another mastermind from one of my other mentors. Like, I feel as though when I have skin in the game, I really pushed myself to work harder to pay attention to focus more on what I'm learning. You know, people often say when you pay, you pay attention. And I believe that and I'm somebody who sells digital courses to other people, obviously entrepreneurs and people growing their businesses. And if I'm going to sell digital courses, I have to believe in the power of educating others, I have to believe in the power that you can buy a digital course. And you can learn exactly what you need to learn in order to further yourself, let's say in your business or something around your personal life, whatever the digital course is about. So I love that I sell digital courses because way back when I believed in digital courses for my own growth, I invested the money and I saw what it did for my business, my dreams. And so now when other people invest in my courses, I know I can help them chase their dreams as well. So for me, how do I make time for my dreams? I educate myself, I make sure that I have the knowledge in order to move myself Forward, I make sure that I show up and I do the work, and masterminds and mentorships, and different digital courses and memberships and all of that I invest in all of it, in order to make sure I'm constantly fueling my brain. Because when I'm fueling my brain, my dreams don't feel that out of touch, they feel a whole lot closer, when I'm constantly moving forward saying all figure this out, I've got this, I've got everything at my fingertips to make this work. So that's how I make time for my dreams. Thanks so much for tuning in.
Kate Kordsmeier 10:44
How great is Amy I just love so much that she emphasizes the importance of investing in yourself. I think it's so hard. You know, as women, we're brainwashed to believe that we are not worth it, that we are not worthy of investing in ourselves of taking time for ourselves of putting ourselves before anyone else. Thank you patriarchy. But it is high time we heal from that brainwashing. And I will admit that if I didn't start investing in myself, if I didn't invest in learning from people who have done things that I want to do before me if I didn't join digital course Academy, I mean, that was a big investment. For me, I was fresh off of a failed launch where I lost over $12,000. And I joined digital course Academy, which costs me two grand to be a part of it was not cheap. And I was certainly not in a position where money was blowing. But because of digital course Academy. And because of that investment that I made in myself, I was able to have a six figure launch not just three months later, and now I'm on track to run a seven figure business. So if I had not invested in myself by joining Amy's course, and I've done this with other things where I've wanted to learn, oh, I need to learn how to create a podcast I need to learn how to grow a team. If I did not invest in myself, I for sure would not be where I am today. So I hope that you take something away from what Amy shared. And I hope that you start realizing your worth and that you are very worthy of investing in. And also if you don't invest in yourself, how can you expect others to invest in you? Head to successwithsoul.co/Bluehost All right, up next we've got my friend Selena Soo. Selena is a publicity and marketing strategist for visionary entrepreneurs, experts and authors who want to reach millions with their message. In fact, she has founded her own program called impacting millions, which is absolutely incredible. It's a program I've taken myself because I invest in myself. And she has helped clients and students get featured in places like Oprah Forbes and Inc, they've landed interviews on popular podcasts and national TV and many of Selena's clients have become industry leaders with seven figure businesses, raving fan bases and hundreds of 1000s of followers. So it takes a lot to run a business like Salinas and I want to know how she makes time for her dreams. So Selena, let's do it.
Selena Soo 14:32
Hey, I'm Selena Soo, creator of impacting millions. And I'm excited to answer this question of how do I make time for my dreams. So there's a couple things. The first thing is I'm really intentional about how I spend my time at work. And I did this exercise where I wrote a list of every single thing that I do at work, and then I color coded it so in green I highlighted all the things I love doing that gives me energy that bring me joy. I feel like when my genius zone in orange, I highlighted things that I can do. But I don't necessarily want to continue doing them, but I certainly can. And then in red, I highlighted things that were draining me that I didn't want to keep doing. And when I had that comprehensive list, I could see where my energy was going. And then I made sure to hire people or delegate out those oranges and reds. So I was just doing the items highlighted in green, which bring me joy and give me energy. Now, the other thing that I do is I'm always try to be very conscious and mindful about opportunities I say yes to because, you know, I am clear about what I do on a day to day basis. But sometimes things come up or, you know, people will suggest an opportunity to collaborate on something, or there is a speaking opportunity or an event. And I am very careful to think things through in detail, you know, as say, someone was like, let's get a cup of coffee, right? You know, what does that mean? You know, it could mean, you know, dressing up and getting into a car and driving out somewhere, and then meeting and coming back. And when you really total the full amount of time for something, is that something that you want to prioritize over all the other things that are really important in the business right now? So before I say, Yes, I really try to think things through and understand all the different components of it. Someone recently asked one of my team members, who is one of our front facing people to be an emcee for her event. And her event is a three day event. And so, you know, I asked a lot of questions, because this could potentially be a good opportunity. But I was curious, you know, how many meetings are involved? And what kind of prep work does my team member need to do, and research on the people that she will be presenting, as the emcee, I really want to understand the full scope of work is it three days of time is is actually five days of time, a week and a half. So it's worth it to ask those questions, just get really clear on what you are committing to. So in addition, so I personally talked about, you know, getting clear on what you're doing and making sure that you're doing things that energize you. And number two, hiring the right people. And then number three is saying no to almost everything. And part of being able to say no is to assess, you know, how much time and energy is this opportunity truly going to take me. Another thing that I do is I wake up pretty early, I wake up at 6am in the morning. And so I get a nice Head Start to my day. And related to that, pretty early, typically at 7am, I have a workout with my virtual personal trainer, and I do a 30 minute workout every day. And that keeps me really energized and feeling strong, and in really great shape to make time to get all my dreams accomplished. And I think a big part of accomplishing your dreams is making sure that you have time in your schedule because you're not saying yes to everything, that you are feeling good because you are doing work that you love and you are staying in your genius zone. And you know relate to that, that you just don't have all these things on your play that are cluttering your mind and making it hard for you to move forward. So those are some of the things that I do to help me stay focused so that I can make time for my dreams.
Kate Kordsmeier 18:34
Oh my gosh, so good. Selena, I love how powerful the power of no can be. And the importance of really getting in your zone of genius, figuring out what are those things that light you up that you enjoy doing that you're good at doing? If you haven't read the book, the big leap. This is a really great exercise and figuring out your zones of incompetence, your zones of competence, zones of excellence and zones of genius, and then hiring out basically everything else that doesn't fit into your zones of genius. So I love Selena's answer. Thank you so much for sharing with us. This episode is brought to you by my free blogging quiz. Okay, up next We've got Lattice Hudson, so Lattice worked for multiple fortune 50 companies and various human resource leadership roles. While behind the scenes she was building multiple five figure businesses during her nights and weekends. But in September of 2018 Lattice left her corporate job to pursue entrepreneurship full time and now she runs a multiple six figure business as an online business coach and mentor. Lattice specializes in helping women entrepreneurs scale their online coaching business to six figures and beyond with strategy systems and leveraged evergreen offers her program the elevat to success accelerator is a group coaching program for women who want to launch and scale a profitable coaching business. One of the things I love about Lattice's mindset is that she preaches that overwhelm is a choice. And I love that so much. Because I think it's so easy for us to fall into this victim mentality or to feel like things are happening to us, not for us, or to feel like we're not the ones in control. And Lattice really turns that on its head. So I'm so excited to share with you how she makes time for her dreams.
Lattice Hudson 21:18
Hi, everyone, my name is Lattice Hudson. I am an online business coach for women coaches and consultants are looking to scale their business to multiple six figures without the crazy launch burnout. So when I think about how making time for my dreams, there are a couple of things that come to mind. So first things first is operating out of the vision always. So so many women come to me burnout overwhelmed out of alignment, and not really in love with how they're running their business. And I knew for so long that was happening to me. So for example, I was launching my different coaching programs. And honestly, I just was very burnt out and overwhelmed. It was very exhausting for me. And I wanted to find a better way. So that's kind of when I discovered evergreen. So when I think about when I thought about my big vision, which was operating a business that was founded in freedom and flexibility, and simplicity, having a business that included endless launches, and tons of emails and having a huge team, which is not something that I wanted. So I had to rewind and look at my big vision. So for me making that next step was it was crucial in finding, investing and mentor specifically, that ran a business model exactly the way that I want it. So obviously there's different things that I operate and how I move and operate my business. But I wanted to find a mentor that was already doing what I was wanting to do. So as far as investing in the right mentors to be able to make time for my dreams, that's been the quickest way to a make time for my dreams and also quantum leap to get there so much faster. Next, when I think about my own energy, so if any of you guys know about human design, I'm a projector. And we don't necessarily have our own energy, we have to create energy, and we get it from others. So it's really important that we a protect our energy and be use the energy that we do have very wisely. So for me as a CEO of a growing multiple six figure business into seven, I knew that I needed to be working on my business instead of in my business. So that looks like investing in team. So for me, mentorship and team are my biggest investments inside of my business. Day in and day out. My team helps me run the day to day operations. My team gives me the flexibility in the piece that I needed back in my business to be able to be in creative flow and also be the the CEO that everybody wants, right be the CEO that everybody around me wants because I knew back when I was starting my business and really growing it at the beginning, I was working so heavily in my business and at the beginning that's what's required. But as you make money in your business, it's so smart and so wise to reinvest back into your business, especially with team because delegating and hiring a team allows you to grow well beyond where you could have ever imagined. And a team allows you to fully bring your vision to life. So honestly, my team's a lifesaver. I went from working close to 40 hours a week as a CEO as a coach at six figures now with the multiple six figure business working less than 20 hours a week. And that's going even more down as we continue to grow. So honestly making time for my dreams really revolves around a making the biggest impact and that is serving my clients at a high level and having a team behind me that supports me. Lastly, I would say as far as going after my dreams, a lot of things that I hear from the women that I work with this they don't speak loud enough about their dreams. And for me, I've always been very loud, very ambitious, very, maybe to some people unrealistic. But the beautiful thing about that is I've reached every goal that I've set for myself up until this point and I I always say we're just getting started. So my biggest tip to any of you listening and wondering how to go after your dreams is start speaking about it. Speak loudly. And that doesn't mean share with everybody. Because not everybody has your best interest. And not everybody truly will get it. But share with the people that you love, share with the people that support you no matter what, and speak loudly and boldly about your dreams. Because at the end of the day, your dreams and your vision are yours per reason, in the world needs you. So that's how I show up powerfully every single day, my business, everybody knows what I do. Everybody knows how passionate I am about it. And honestly, I don't ever want to lay down at the end of my life and regret anything. So for me, that means showing up powerfully every single day, sharing my vision impacting women, and getting more wealth in the hands of women, especially women of color, to do big, bold things in their life. So going after my dreams hasn't always been easy, but it's always been worth it. And if you're in a point where you are wanting to scale wanting to grow your business, wanting to live out your wildest dreams, I'm going to tell you to go for it and never look back. Because future you is going to thank current you
Kate Kordsmeier 26:14
